I drafted this post as the Thursday night game progressed, not before or after the fact....please keep that in mind, as you read through this. I have no idea whether or not anyone has ever written a post like this on the Covers forum. I am sure there have been more polished, insightful, and accurate comments delivered on the site. If anything else, I hope this is a good read for other college football fans out there. again, I jotted some notes down as I witnessed an amazing battle tonight between two college football teams (definitely worth my monthly DirecTV service).
I am a loyal OSU fan (Ohio State.... but after tonight, maybe now Oregon State as well). As you can see from my profile, I do not post on this site (predictions, comments, etc.). I've been a member on Covers since 2002. I enjoy reading the NCAA and NFL posts each week, all year, every year. There are some really solid cappers, and there is also funny shit posted here every day.
Do I gamble for entertainment purposes?... Yes. Do I make a lot of money on my football picks each year? Not really (varies, based on what one considers "a lot" of money). To me, I don't bet a lot, at least compared to the $ some folks on this site advertise. Regardless of that, all you can say about tonight is..... "what a game!!!!!"
It has been a while since I have seen a college game, as the one I witnessed tonight. I have to admit, most of my Fall Saturday's are dedicated to watching college football..... from 9 am pst Saturday to past 12 am on Sunday (Hawaii games). I was at the Coliseum on Saturday, September 13th. I drove >400 miles (each way) w/ my dad (An avid USC fan, by the way) to watch my Buckeyes get their a$$ kicked in the "game of the year." The atmosphere was great, I loved being there to watch the game. But it was nothing compared to the game I watched tonight.
I was torn all night, rooting for the underdog Beavers, wanting them to crush the hopes and dreams of USC who demolished the Buckeyes. At the same time I was pulling for USC to make a comeback. I like the Pac-10, particularly USC. I enjoy the style of play, the late night games & action. It is an entertaining conference, that is a fact (for those who are privileged enough to get to watch the late night Pac 10 games each week).
In the end, I found myself rooting for USC in the 4th quarter. Ohio State annihilated by USC two weeks earlier, Oregon State crushed by Penn State the same weekend weekend and beaten by Stanford the week before that. Ummmmm, ok..... Where does that leave my Buckeyes? If I am Jeff Sagarin, I am rating Ohio State right there with the Nevada Wolf Pack (my alma mater).
I know the SEC is good, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. It is early in the season, and we'll all be able to measure the greatness of each conference over the next several months. For all we know right now, LSU = Oregon State.... Auburn = USC.. yada, yada. I know, I know.... LSU is no Oregon State
Maybe I am a bitter, salty Ohio State fan.... could be... probably. But remember from earlier, I am also a USC fan (crazy I know). Most importantly, I am a college football fan. I cannot wait to see how this season plays out. Playoff, no playoff, whatever.... we can keep debating that issue. For now, let's enjoy the next 9+ weeks.... they go by fast! Let's pray for some games as entertaining as the one we watched this evening (or early Friday am for you E. Coast folks).
I don't know why, but I took some pictures of the the game tonight on my camera (from my living room, not Corvallis, Oregon). It is a little odd, kinda gay.. have never done it before in my life. I think I really started off wanting to give my dad some shit, once I noticed how the momentum was really favoring Oregon State. Send him an album of all the Oregon State-favored shots. So most of the picks lean towards OSU, but then again... that is how most of the game went. Check them out, if you want..... kind of cool, if you are a football nerd, like me.. I did not add any comments to the pictures. If you watched the game, you should be able to come up w/ your own caption for each photo.
