It will be interesting to see if Drew Smyly does not make the All Star
Team due to his W-L record, currently 1-3. One of the best pitchers in the game
regardless of that. In team results the Rays are just 3-3 in Smyly’s starts,
but that is where it starts to get interesting. All 3 losses were to right
handed starters and the Rays do not hit righties very well at all, scoring just
2.5 earned runs per 9 in that category. They were even worse in the 3 they lost
with Smyly on the hill, scoring only 5 runs for an average of 1.67. If faced
with lefty opponents Smyly could easily be 5-1 or 6-0, as he is 5-1 in quality
starts and the Rays hit lefties so well that if they hit righties just as well
they would be leading the division. A rating of 37.9 and 5.8 earned runs per 9
is a far cry from their numbers versus righty and in a class with the best
righty hitting teams in either league. Wade Miley is slumping, unimpressive
this year in spite of the move to a natural pitcher’s park, and good lefty park
to boot. I make Smyly worth 88 cents of line value just on the basis of the
pitching matchup and the offensive value of the 2 lineups another 20 cents, so
a fair neutral field line would be Rays -208. Home field advantage does not
cover the difference.
Only play of the day.

Kluber threw a dud for us last night. Better luck tonight Key
Kluber has been a hard guy to get a handle on this year, but that didn't hurt me any worse than the 19 stranded base runners in the Brewers-Marlins game. Oh well, we knew it was gambling when we got involved.

Or when the run was taken off the board on the home run. Don't know if I have seen that before...

It happens every couple of years. Some players in every sport are marvelous athletes, but not rocket scientists. I once knew a coach so frustrated with a player's bad base running skills he actually grabbed him as he was rounding third and pushed him back. Got caught of course and the guy was ruled out, but the coach said it was almost worth it to see the look on his face.

The Mets are not a lefty hitting machine but that doesn’t make Alex Wood
a Clayton Kershaw clone either. I don’t know and don’t care who is moving the
line, Mr. Deep Pockets or just the whole metropolitan population of Los
Angeles, but in my humble opinion they are moving it the wrong way.
Sorry, but I didn't think
this opportunity would come along.
