#2 Posted: 1/15/2013 3:47:25 PM Been a loyal fan since 1967. Seen a lot of ups and downs since then. Last year was a bear to watch but I knew when they hired "The Voice", they were either going to be very good or the worst. We know what happened. The players took issue with BV, and it showed on the field. Thanks goodness the nightmare of last year is over.
This year will be interesting. While they have the parts, the chemistry issue is yet to be determined. Not sure if John F. is the answer but at least he will be more of a stabilizing force than BV. One of the issues is that the division is much better as is the rest of the AL. I don't see a division title, and with two WCs, it is slightly possible to make the playoffs.
I will be very interested to see what LV puts their O/U for the year. I suspect it will be around 81. Even with that number, it may be difficult to go over with the competition that they will have to face. Like every other team, it comes down to pitching. If Lackey can come back to some level of effectiveness, and if Lester can be more of a consistent force, that would go a long way. Catching and SS play are of a concern. The problem is, there are too many ifs going into this season. Yet, the potential is there to surprise. Stay tuned.
One Man's Opinion.
Good Luck.

#9 Posted: 1/23/2013 10:27:15 PM Just some quick observations...
Red Sox play in the AL East, the toughest Division in MLB, bar none. Five teams beating up on each other will either make you or break you.
Starting rotation is extremely questionable. The team hierarchy recognized this and has built a very solid bullpen to shoulder the weight.
Lots of players coming off injuries. CF Ellsbury, SS Drew, 3B Middleton all appear ready to go. But we can't be certain about DH Ortiz nagging Achilles and SP Lackey's Tommy John surgery. Those are two huge question marks.
Defense is also questionable. 1B Napoli will commit more than his share of errors. C Salty can't throw a base runner out to save his life.
Down on the farm, Red Sox have some great talent knocking on the door. SS Iglesias has a million dollar glove but a 10 cent bat. Another SS Bogaerts can hit for both average and power and projects a move to 3B or OF. OF Bradley can hit for average and has a gun for an arm. SP is also stacked with Barnes, Webster, De La Rosa. So, help is on the way, and fast.
As a Sox fan, it pains me to say that this probably not a playoff team, although anything can happen in baseball. No doubt Boston plays better than the 69 wins of 2012. Expect Boston to improve to 80 wins, a .500 ball club.

#12 Posted: 1/29/2013 8:32:16 AM AL East is the toughest division to predict an outcome. The Yankees and Sox have fallen, the Rays are solid and the Jays and O's have stepped up. I don't like Boston's chance because I don't like their rotation and they have a line up full of guys who are coming off injury plagued seasons...I would say highly unlikely for the Red Sox but stranger things have happened. |

#13 Posted: 1/29/2013 11:39:36 AM Cant be any worse then last year. New coach, who was the right hire IMO. New attitude, need some of the Sox vets to step up and bring this team back in the right direction. Excited for April, as we can put last years season behind us. Better bullpen with Hanaran. Not saying they will make the playoffs...but with that extra playoff spot now, i could see them climbing in if there pitching is decent. |
