Question

The Tigers want J.J. Hardy for Porcello. I personally hope the Tigers don't make this trade. Porcello is still young at the age of 23 I believe. Peralta did very well last year. This will probably be his last year as a Tiger...but if an injury occurs to the starting rotation they can use him and Smyly. Thoughts on this?

Upgrade for the Tigers in my opinion. Porcello is NBFD and getting a little sharper at short wouldn&#x27;t hurt anything. Time to stop holding your breath waiting for Porcello to hit his stride.

The Tigers covet JJ Hardy and its going to cost a lot more than Porcello.

ALso anyone who thinks that Peralta is not that much worse than JJ defensively needs to reevaluate that stance. JJ Hardy has been one of the top defensive SS in the league for quite some time. Last year he was the 2nd best defensive SS only behind the greatest defensive SS since Belanger, Brenden Ryan. In fact JJ Hardy was the 4th best defender in all of baseball (every position) according to dWAR with a 2.8 while Ryan (2nd) had a 3.6.

Peralta for comparisons sake had a 0.6 dWAR ranking 108th.

In 2011 JJ had a 1.5 dWAR ranking 26 in all of baseball. Peralta had a 1.0 ranking 55.

In 10 years Peralta has accumulated a total of 4.0 dWAR while JJ Hardy has 10.8 dWAR over 8 years.

Offensively they are very similar but defensively they are very far apart and that is why JJ Hardy is such a commodity. Add that to his extremely discounted 2 year contract and its going to cost a lot more than Porcello since the market for a SS of Hardy's quality at his price is non existent.

Also the Orioles are not interested in trading JJ they love their left side of the infield and unless they are absolutely blown away Hardy wont be going anywhere.

Porcello is 24 years old and has a grea theavy power sinker that results in great ground ball rate. You cant teach that and groundballs are hte most important thing for a pitcher other than Ks.Problem for Porcello is he has that putrid Tigers defensive behind him so he gets zero help and it inflates his stat line.

For Tigers fans the asking price for JJ Hardy is probably Porcello and nick castellanos and even that might not be enough for the O's to say yes.

That is how highly they view JJ Hardy and how barren the SS position is that it makes JJ Hardy a valuable commodity.

The Tigers and Cubs are discussing a potential three-way trade that would send Rick Porcello to Chicago with the Orioles as the third party, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. The Tigers want Baltimore involved because they want shortstop J.J. Hardy and they don't feel that the Cubs have the necessary components to make it a two-team trade.

For the O's to part ways with Hardy in a deal, the Cubs would have to send pitching to the Orioles. However, Kubatko thinks that the O's will have to be overwhelmed by an offer in order to part with Hardy. Dan Duquette & Co. are happy with the left side of their infield and they don't intend on moving Manny Machado to shortstop this year.

The Orioles are also one of the teams that are interested in Porcello and it's logical to think that they could just hammer out a two-team swap with the Tigers instead. The Padres, Mariners, and Pirates have also expressed interest in the right-hander recently. The 24-year-old posted a 4.59 ERA with 5.5 K/9, 2.2 BB/9 and a 53.2% ground ball rate last season and is under team control through 2015.

The Cubs have nothing of interest to the Orioles except for Garza but Garza only has 1 year left.

1 year of Garza is not enough for 2 years of Hardy at $7m/yr. The Orioles want pitching and if Hardy is moved they need someone who is capable of manning 3rd base and is defensively capable as Manny was at 3rd.

The O's and Tigers could just make a deal instead.

Os get: Porcello, Nick Castellanos, Peralta
Tigers get: Hardy, Jim Johnson, Patton, Avery

Os get possible 3rd baseman of future with Peralta as 1 yr stop gap playing 3rd. Tigers get their SS that they covet and top notch closer with a dependable lefty out of hte pen and a toolsy OF. There is no room for Peralta if Hardy were to be acquired since Prince and Miggy man the corners.

I still dont think the O's would make that trade. Buck loves Hardy and having some of the best defenders in the game up the middle with Wieters, Hardy and AJones

Damn what a huge upgrade that would be for the Tigers to win NOW. Think Porcello will be a strong #2 in the next few years but HArdy is a top 5 SS imo.

When you combine JJs defense with his power coming from the SS position... He is most definitely a top 5 SS in the game right now. The average OPS for SS last year was .686 or something like that...

That is how weak the SS position is in todays game.

No way would I send them both of them for a 30 year old JJ Hardy. I agree that SS is a tough position to upgrade with few top notch performers who ever become available, but not a chance in hell is Castellanos involved in that deal. I agree Key that Porcello is NBFD, he may yet blossom but I don&#x27;t think it is going to be in Detroit, especially with the range of the infield. I think they need to hold him for now though because his value will increase when a couple teams lose a starter to Tommy John surgery in spring training or early in the season.

The Tigers have shown in the past they will move their top prospects, but it is for true impact players to the major league club like Miggy and Anibal Sanchez. I wouldnt be surprised to see it happen again, but it won&#x27;t be for JJ Hardy, who I would like to have in place of Peralta but not at the likely price of what it would take to obtain him.

As you say, SECOND place in importance, but as for the putrid defense behind him is it not the same defense that plays behind Verlander, Fister, Sanchez, Scherzer and Smyly? All 5 are more effective pitchers than Porcello. ONE impressive stat in a pitchers prospectus does not make my heart go pitty-pat. The Orioles won&#x27;t go even up for Hardy, and if they did they would be fired. In fact if they do the whole management staff should be drawn and quartered, but they will make the price very steep indeed and the Tigers can probably afford it as Porcello is expendable.

Porcello would benefit without question from a stronger defensive infield without question, but it isn&#x27;t like he becomes Verlander or Clayton Kershaw. Heck he could have Keith Hernandez, Bill Mazeroski, Ozzie Smith and Brooks Robinson behind him and he isn&#x27;t an all star. The O&#x27;s don&#x27;t want to move Hardy anyways so this all just a good way to kill sometime during the slowest part of the sports year for me.

Verlander is a strikeout pitcher and top 3 in the game.
Fister has better K rate
Smyly is LH with good K rate but only 40% gb
Scherzer great K rate and not a gb ball pitcher only 37% last year and 40% in years past

The Tigers infield D might be the worst in the league by a far margin. Their OF D and forgiving pitchers field help their other pitchers. It doesnt help with Porcello and all his groundballs reaching the outfield for hits.

I would love to add Porcello but not for Hardy straight up and the Orioles management feels the same way. They know SS of Hardy's caliber and at his contract dont exist in the game today, right now. The price will be very steep and the O's wont sacrifice moving Hardy and his defense unless they can replace Machado at 3rd with an defender or near equal quality.
