He's also ranked 30th in GB/FB ratio. He should be forcing many more ground balls then he is. Something is off with his mechanics tonight and Baltimore's bullpen is only average. Lets hope he can settle down and get through 5 without giving up any more because Morrow looks good so far.
Ranked 30th would mean he gives up a lot of flyballs would it not?

Ranked 30 out of 194 starting pitchers. That means he's pretty damn good in that department. His GB/FB ratio is just over 2:1 meaning he forces two ground balls for every one fly ball. He's about league average in line drives.

Hammel is all over the middle of the plate. He just doesn't have it tonight. Going to need Baltimore's bullpen to show up for the full game under to have a chance.

He is not able to keep his FB on the corners. It keeps tailing to the middle of the plate and he isnt keeping it down.

Bad combination.
Yep. Exactly what I'm seeing. He should get pulled with a low pitch count to save his arm for the next start. Just a bit off tonight, but he has great stuff sometimes. I'm sure the pitching coaches are seeing the same thing and weighing the pros and cons of going into their 20th ranked BP early.

They have a great ERA but their advanced stats in FIP, xFIP and SIERA all indicate that their bullpen isn't as good as how they've been performing to date. They're ranked 20th in my advanced stats power ranking that looks at K and BB ratios, BA and BABIP, ERA-scaled predictors as well as clutch data.

I still dont see how you get they are ranked 20th.
FIP and xFIP they are still top half in the league and SIERA they are top 10.
ERA - still 2nd and xFIP - top 10.
K/9 they are 3rd to last but they also have the 2nd lowest BABIP. 2nd lowest BB/9.
The only real negatives about their BP numbers are their HR/9 and k/9.
There isn't a big difference between the team ranked 10th and the team ranked 20th in my power rankings. .15 runs/9 according to my power rankings actually. But that's their quantitative ranking according to my formula. You certainly have the right to disagree, you can interpret the numbers however you want. This is how I see it though.

Orioles have the 4th highest GB% and 6th best LD%.
GB pitchers tend to pitch to contact and have lower K rates which based on your rankings seems to undervalue that part of hte Orioles BP>
I want my relievers to pitch for strikeouts.
Approximately 2/3s of my formula incorporates statistics that are considered predictor metrics. They do have good numbers now, but I don't see it keeping up. That and other reasons about my personal opinions on what makes up a good bullpen (and how I weighted the metrics in my formula to reflect that) dictate their 20th place ranking.
