The Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians were discussing a three-way trade Thursday night that would send Victor Martinez to Boston, Clay Buchholz to Cleveland and prospects flying in all directions, according to clubs that spoke to both teams.
The Red Sox also would attempt to move recently acquired first baseman Adam LaRoche,
either to a third team or in a companion deal, to make room for
catcher/first baseman Martinez in their lineup, one source said.

BUCHHOLZ SUCKS!! WHAT HAS HE DONE??? I DONT KNOW WHY SOX FANS WANT TO KEEP HIM SO BAD!
6-11 lifetime record. 5.29 era, a whip of 1.61, and an opp BA of 280.
Johan Santana had a 6.49 ERA and a 4.74 ERA in his first 2 seasons(albeit most games in the bullpen). It's not about how you start, it's how you finish.
I do know that he's 25 and, imo, doesn't have as much of an upside as Hughes and Joba simply because they're still only 23. Thats a big difference in baseball years.

First baseman Adam LaRoche becomes expendable for Boston if they complete the Victor Martinez trade; Jon Heyman of SI tells us via Twitter that the Braves are interested.

Striking late and dramatically, the Boston Red Sox bolstered their lineup by acquiring All-Star catcher Victor Martinez from Cleveland less than two hours before Friday's non-waivers trade deadline, CBSSports.com has learned.
The blockbuster deal comes following several days during which the Red Sox were hot on the trail of Martinez, San Diego slugger Adrian Gonzalez and Toronto ace Roy Halladay. Martinez, a three-time All-Star, was batting .284 with 15 homers and 67 RBI in 99 games for the Indians this season and arrives in Boston with the Red Sox having fallen into second place in the AL East, two games behind the New York Yankees.
The addition of Martinez is a huge boon for the Red Sox, who are concerned with the health of catcher Jason Varitek, 37, and who have watched slugger David Ortiz regress some this season. Martinez can catch, play first base and, of course, serve as designated hitter.
It is not yet known whom the Indians will receive.

1:35pm: MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo says (via Twitter) pitchers Nick Hagadone and Justin Masterson are in the deal (ESPN's Peter Gammons agrees). Gut reaction: nice haul. Mayo also says the two clubs are looking at additional names to add for Cleveland
