Well apparently theres more than just the handful of us around here, Geoffrey, TDD, vicb, tone and a couple others who think that Mike Richards is a special player. The Flyers knew it and I for one am very glad they locked him up before he became a restricted free agent. The kids gonna be around the league for a long time. Everyone who has seen him play in the past and present knows hes something special that you can build a team around and thats just what the Flyers are doing. Yes people are going to say its not worth it, personally I hate how often teams just let players go. Im happy to see some loyalty between a team and player and I dont think it could have happened to a better player.

Centre Mike Richards, who has emerged as one of the league's top two-way forwards this season, has signed a contract extension with the Philadelphia Flyers.

"I want to be here, I love the city, I love the organization and when I was given the opportunity I was excited to be here over the next twelve years," Richards relayed to the Associated Press.

TSN has learned it is a 12-year extension for $69 million that averages out at $5.75 million per year for the cap hit.

"It is a unique contract for a unique player," said Pat Morris, the agent that represents Richards, told the Associated Press. "I don't think that it will set off a trend for other players by any means."

Richards was scheduled to be a restricted free agent after this season, but the extension will take him off the market and keep him in Philadelphia.

In his third NHL season, Richards has exploded offensively. He leads the Flyers in goals (14), assists (20) and points (34).

A reflection of his complete play his season: Richards has four powerplay goals, three shorthanded goals and three game-winning goals. He also has a +10 rating.

A former first round pick, 24th overall in 2003, Richards has 35 goals and 100 points in 166 NHL games.

Not someone I would pay money to watch play .  Flyers must really feel he's the real deal and not a one-year wonder.

Im just happy the Flyers are signing their talent for years to come. Building a solid nucleus to the normal revolving door that is pro sports today. Richards for 12, Briere for 8, Timonen and Hartnell for 6. Cant really find any of the other lengths of contracts without looking each one up which im a bit too lazy to do atm. Is there a central database where this sort of info is kept?

Id say lets grab a beer at the Red Bell Brewery but they seem to have removed that from the Wachovia Center

Based on your funny comments above, something tells me your a Leave fan and not able to even carry the jockstrap of a Flyer supporter, though we would kindly allow you a good sniff.

Good call! My hockey winnings so far this year are whats paying for my season tickets next year...That was my goal. Started with $50 and worked my way up to paying for season tickets. Now to start working on Phillies tickets

Chickie & Pete's has to be one of the best sportsbars ever. love the place.

Definitely agree 100% Aneb1ated. This guy is a born leader on the ice. Recall his last year in the OHL finals against London when he basically was the only major weapon Kitchener had that year and he basically carried the club on his back in giving it everything he had in that final series. The Knights eventually went on to capture the Memorial Cup that season, with guys like Richard's current Flyer roommate Jeff Carter, Cory Perry, etc. That club was stacked and Richards turned out to be a one-man wrecking crew for the Rangers in that series. He scored, he fought, killed penalties, powerplay, you name it, he was involved. The signing is a huge bonus for the Flyers and I am completely satisfied with the job GM Paul Holmgrem has dome with his club todate.

Yeah maybe, unless he switched teams after the Flames 9-goal outburst last night. Maybe he alters his preference each night.

Forgive me for being ignorant, but what good does it do for Richards financially to sign a 12 year deal?  I mean, I understand job security, but someone of his talent would not struggle to find work in the NHL.  My thinking is, he's being payed well, but lets say 3 or 4 years down the road guys like Syd and OV and Datsyuk sign extensions that pay them in the range of 8 mill a year or so.  And lets say Richards is right up there with these guys in points and talent level (this is not far fetched at all).  Richards is locked into a contract for the next 12 years, and while he is being payed well, there will be guys getting more money than him in a few years, and chances are some of the guys making more than him, arent as good as him.  I kind of feel like he pigeon holed himself, and lost any room for bargaining.

No need to call names buddy. I was simply stating that I would never to drawn to a game to see Richards play like I would Briere, etc.  Relax dude.

The way the contract is set up it starts of around 4m next year, works it way up to 7m by around year 6 or 7 of the contract then slowly works its way back down by the end.The last 2 years are worth 3m each. There is a no-trade clause but that is waived after he is 30 or so, so there is a chance for him to get out of it later. Basically, this contract is about respect. The Flyers fans LOVE this guy, the front office obviously feels the same way. The coaching staff raves about him. Richards loves the city. Its a good deal for all parties. In his press conference Holmgren said they debated a few contracts for even longer terms. I see this guy kind of like a future Brind'Amour. Might not be a high profile big time player, but hell go out and play hard every night and make a contribution. Solid 2 way hockey player who is still young and improving.

geoffrey geoffrey goeffrey, why are you always mad?  Blake stated his opinion on the signing; then you name call like a little kid.  Clearly his favorite team is Edmonton who beat the Wings last night in a snoozer.  Dominick was playing like he always does letting in the shots he needs to save at key moments.
