These guys are so stupid it hurts. 3.3 billion lost if the season is a wash. They are a few hundred million apart. This isn't difficult math.

It's more than 3.3 billion!

The NHL brand had taken a big hit!
I don't see how the NHL will survive another lost season! The fact that the owners are playing hardball shows in dire straits, the business model of the NHL!

All the momentum of an LAK Cup is gone and never to be found again. How these guys have let it get to this point boggles my mind. Does anybody even remember Darryl Sutter getting hired and transforming LA into a juggernaut in a matter of weeks?

think that's pretty much a "true statement". the "non-traditional" hockey markets in the States probably don't even MISS NHL hockey. GREAT move by David Stern and the NBA getting former NBA lawyer Bettman as NHLcommissioner  to destroy the "competetion".

with more than half the season now officially CANCELLED, may as well just cancel the whole season. playing any games now just to have some half-baked "playoffs" in the spring is a JOKE

We finally win a cup and now we won't wont even be able to raise that banner. What an absolute joke.

When you have players signed to 10-14 year deals then yes, your business model is broken. Players need to cave in already. They make too much money in a sport that nobody watches.

Ah well. At least my Galaxy won back 2 back!

Not a big fan of a 48 game season. 1995 showed how big of a disadvantage long travel in a short period turned out. The devils had no business sweeping the wings! the Western conference will have a hell of a time with only in conference games being played!
Winnipeg will be in a horrid situation as well in that division!

When you have an unwilling "partner" like Fehr that schemes with realignment yet doesn't show his hand until its too late, not the best recipe for a deal!

Playing a shortened season at this point is just a money grab for owners and the players. The integrity of the game has been compromised.

A lot of teams will suffer that rely on walk up crowds! The Ottawa Senators come to mind. I can see that team moving in 5 years to that other LA CAPITALE!

They should just cancel the year, I think that would be the only way to wake up the players when it comes to Fehr's tactics!

You consider ratboy and the owners willing partners?  Guys who made what 8-10 6 years and up contracts from end of this season till start of lockout? Fehr is an absolute box but I cant understand how anyone can blame the players when the fuc k tard owners give them these retarded contracts.

No, I never considered them "partners"
The players are EMPLOYEES!
The owners have the right to do whatever they please. They run the league and are trying to keep it viable. Thats their responsibility, they owe nothing to the players. Once the CBA ends, the game changes! The past is the past! The owners are trying to govern the league responsibly while the players are playing games both on and off the ice!
I don't see the players giving away their guaranteed contracts (which don't exist in a lot of leagues) to keep the league healthy! The problem is the guys like Hainsey, Gorges, Gomez whom make millions of guaranteed money. Crosby is underpaid! The league isn't a league like the NBA, where stars carry the league! No one pays attention to this league in a lot of markets yet most players are paid like stars!

Yet another one, misquotes me and takes what i say out of context. Everyone avoids the issues and turns it into a pissing contest!

YES and the performance those "employees" is the ONLY PRODUCT that the "Owners" have to SELL.

this isn't like a traditional work stoppage even in a high skill business like flying or repairing an aircraft for an airline where you can still get "qualified" people to do the job. the NHL isn't going to bring in a bunch of lower level players because they know the quality of their product would SUCK and the fans wouldn't STAND for it.

and your statement that "The league isn't a league like the NBA, where stars carry the league!" is just plain foolish. stars like Gretsky single handly saved hockey in LA as did Mario in Pittsburgh both as a player AND later as an owner. fans want to see the "marquee" players in NHL Hockey just like in any other sport

I am still unclear who gave these guys the contracts?  If you want to keep it viable why pay these mooks this much?  The last sentence in your post is really Good thing you arent avoiding the real issues in this league.  Cant wait for the next expansion ratboy comes up with.

Bettmans "Plan 9 from Outer Space" for going to 4 conferences is yet MORE idiocy from that fool. that would mean two with 8 teams and two with 7. guess you would have to add two more teams to "even out" an already diluted league.

They should start the season the day after the Super Bowl, play a short regular season schedule and then have the playoffs. No one cares about the regular season anyway. It's way too long. The playoffs are exciting and that's all anyone wants to see anyway.

marnypoly is correct. The players are making way too much money in a sport that has a very limited market. The owners are at fault because they've overpaid the players and now they want to be saved from themselves. The owners don't need for play to resume. The players do.

The general feeling within my group [Most of us have seasons tickets] is one of general apathy towards the whole thing. It's saving us all a bunch of money in tickets, booze and dining costs.

This might have to be a two year strike if the players are serious about getting what they want. Nobody even talks about the strike anymore and nobody I know has taken sides.

If the players settle again for what they were offered at the beginning, then from my point of view all they wanted was a year off. Nothing more.

The owners don't need for play to resume. The players do.

and this is WHY? maybe for the North American born and bred players BUT the Europeans and esp the Russians have plenty of places to play for decent money. many of the top Russians are probaly making MORE on a per-game (and defintely after tax) basis that they do in the 82 game + playoffs NHL schlage

I wouldn't be the least bit suprise IF top Russians don't come back IF the league trys to cut their contracts

CANCEL the NHL! Destroy and rebuild. been thinking long and hard about this. Get something like soccer where there is a champions league(which would be the original 6 plus the best teams of expansion or something.
