What do you think this lockout will do to the NHL in the short term and in the long term. If this season is lost, What will be the future of this league, The NHL is mostly a regional sports and for the most part cannot get good TV ratings on network TV. And this goes back to the days of Orr and Bobby Hull. I just do not know what the future of the NHL is going to be.

Pavel Bure Hall of Fame today..... U too Burnaby Joe...

As for the future for the NHL,,,, It will take another 10 years to get to the point we were at...

Is this season to start in January now?

Depends if they lose the whole season or not, and I dont believe they will let that happen.

While some will disagree with this but untill the States can produce  considerable more top tier talent the little to none interest will remain the same. I really don't think the average sports fan down there really gives a darn about a game dominated by Canadians and Euros.

As well the lockout is about the future, the owners future. The Yotes went bankrupt and is now controlled by the league, Tom Galardi from Van City saved the Stars from the same, the Devils are in trouble, the Isles just signed a 25yr lease after exhausting all options to get a arena in partnership with the local goverment, which saved the Penguins from relocating, a friggin drug tycoon want's money from Edmonton to build a new rink. There was a thing on the news locally about the city of Abbortsford forking out $2.5 mil year to the friggin AHL Heat, a Flamers farm team. Minnesota and Carolina forked out huge money last summer just to compete and sell a few more tickets in hope to make a small profit, seriously 6 mil for Alex Semin?? The shits endless.

Hey Lance,  It is stupid to have the Baby Flames in Abborts can you see the Wolves going there

Closest coming to the NHL was in Abborts over the weekend with all the Oil fans in the house...

It's possible actually, the Nucks farm team have gone from Syracuse to Winnepeg and now Chicago if I recall correctly. I have no idea if the Heat has a agreement for whatever years with the Flamers, the fact that city of abby subsidies this garbage if complete crap, I'm guessing the economic impact at least makes it a wash, they get some decent concerts in that venue as well, STP, Kiss, Megadeth, John Fogerty, ZZ Top to name a few off the top of my balding head.

Quick, Parise, Kane, Miller, ect don't sell tickets or "sell the game" like Crosby or Ovie. If Jon Quick passed you at the airport would you recognize him? How many Patrick Kane posters, jerseys, whatever merchandise is sold compared to Derrick Rose or Jay Cutler? Does anybody either than the Wilds seasons tickets holders give a darn about the Ryan Suter and Parise signings with the Vikings winning games again with a healthy AP and improving Christian Ponder? who's current girlfriend is likely a bigger topic on local sports radio than the friggin lockout.

Lance.. Unfortunately, the U.S. does not need Hockey as does Canada.... The U.S. has much more to offer in the way of sports..

So, the fact that Hockey cant make it down here has many reasons, not just that Canada has better players....

As I can remember, there were more than one team moving out of a poor Canadian market into the good ole U.S.of A only to become successful.....

Most Americans are not excited about Hockey, this is true.... Its a great sport.. There are as many successful American teams as there are Canadian teams.... There would not be 24 successful Canadian teams either..... 10 Canadian and 10 U.S. teams wwould probably be just about right....

It's not a Canada has better players thing, it's just American teams rosters are 90% foreigners, it's not like the Anaheim Ducks have a roster of all americans from UCLA and Stanford, more like a bunch of dudes from Ontario and Finland, sports fans tend to rally more around home grown talent more. Which what made the Montreal Canadian cup winning teams of the past so special, those teams were basically entirely francophones.

to start, my friend lance   hockey here is a players sport. everyone i know who played its thier only sport or the favorite sport. when i was 15 and the usa won the gold it was amazing(know you guys dont look at it like that) but i am very happy if it happened again,it would no longer be called a friggin miracle! wang? tried to fund it himself, but wanted to much more. political garbage you dont see, like a mall, not to far from a mall that the politicians have there hand in thier pockets, and housing, which is why people left the city.(no housing projects in long island) i dont know about the edmonton thing, but really intersed in seeing this team develop.my friend faceoff  the us needs hockey even if its for fool like me! do agree with cutting down the teams(just remember my boys have been here 4 decades) lot of people girl, but it started fucked up.there were 144 canadien players, but 4 of 6 teams played on u.s, soil? back to lance, yes most people root for the home team. you might be right, but we are improving! i miss the greatest game on earth! canadas game!!!!

Wow, now gary decides to take a 2 week "moratorium" after fehr tells him "he doesn't know where to go from here." So obviously this means that December games will be cancelled.  This shits getting me so angry, i feel sick to my stomach.  I know its wrong, but i've wished gary dead everyday for the last 2 months

Potvin... I love Hockey... It's just that some of the statements we have to endure sometimes are bigoted and downright prejudicial.... Its always one thing or another..... U.S. cant support this many teams.... Canada even less teams....
Simply due to the outrageous salaries and lack of '' true fans of the sport''.. Not just homers... Because most hockey fans seem to be just that, 'homers'.....

Canadian dollar is better than ever.. Why are all these great Canadian born players coming down here to play...?... Maybe Canada is not such a great place to be after all is said and done....

Canadian born, euro, ruskie, U.S.... Wherever they are from, every body wants to be in the U.S of A..... Cant be denied... Proof is in the pudding..

Have you ever been to Calgary or Edmonton? in the winter?

With the exception of Van City which is basically like Seattle, Canadian winters are brutal, everything is frozen solid for damn near 3 months straight, maybe more. Winnipeg or San Jose, hhmmm.

Fairy Buttman lost his mind (again). Somebody form another league, do something, soooo pissed. How the darn did I survive 04-05? Not too sure. Young players like Giroux and Stamkos are on the up and up, and they are collecting dust why dumb behind NY lawyers are running the asylum. We have the occupy movement, why don't we organize some of these by fans where we occupy NHL offices or rinks? Or do we give a darn?

WOW!!! just read this on TSN.ca and could NOT BELIEVE it. BOTH these FOOLS (but esp Bettman) are going to DESTROY the NHL as a viable sports league which was probably NBA commissioner David Stern's plan all along.

The problem is Fehr playing hardball like he did with the baseball union. Hockey will never get the US Congress involved in the dispute like baseball did back in the day. Like I said in a previous post the NHL is the 5th most popular sport in the US so most fans don't give a crap if it dies. Don't get me wrong I love hockey and I'm really missing it right now but unless the players union lowers their demands the season is doomed.

I think the owners and fool Bettman have a lot more to lose than the players. trying to balance the NHL's books and save the marginal teams on the back of the players is NOT going to work this time. the league saw revenue go from $2 billion to $3 billion under the old contract and now Bettman is "crying poor"?

btw IF I was NBC Sports I would be trying to get out of that contract because it's NEVER a good idea to do business with crazy people. darn Bettman, the Owners AND NHL Management

actually, the game of Hockey has a lot more of an international following than other "American" sports like American style football or even baseball. for as big as the NFL is in America, it's pretty much a flop everywhere else ex for Canada and baseball is the same BUT you CAN add the Latin countrys. world wide, Cricket probaly has more fans than baseball esp in former British countries like India and Pakistan.

that's one reason the NHL lockout isn't that "horrible" for the players esp the Russians and Europeans. they can just play back home for decent money esp in the KHL.
