Take my word for it the NHL season will be cancelled. When the players hired Don Fehr they sealed their fate. The owners will never give in to the strong arm tactics of Fehr. I love hockey so this really hurts but the players better wake up and take what they can get or they all can go to Russia and play for an average salary of 50K.

All-Star Game Cancelled

Union offered 50/50 split of hockey related revenue and $393 million in deferred payments.NHL offered $211 million in a season where a full 82 games are played.

Management wants a 7 year deal, which the union says is too long because fewer than half the current players would be active by it's expiration.

I was wondering why they just did not bring in replacement players like they did in the last baseball and football work stoppages.  That seems to settle the problem pretty quickly when these players thought someone else would be taking over their job.

If the union is dumb enough not to give in. There will be teams folding next year, the floridas, islanders, stars and blue jackets meaning less jobs available. Sponsors will never come back and most importantly, the players will never see that 1.8 billion owed to them this year.

All fighting over term limits. Term limits that weren't in affect before 2005. There were no 5 year contracts. These long term contracts were created by scheming player agents and gms!

The whole idea of a MAX 5 year term is to avoid salary cap circumvention. To play fair and have a viable league that's what the owners want.

A lot of the players are misinformed or feel powerless to act with the hypocrisy in the union, hello Shand Doan and Erik Cole.

I could write a book on the hypocrisy of Erik Cole.

The season will end in two more weeks. The owners will give the union a final offer and if it is rejected the owners will cancel the season. Some of the owners make money by NOT playing so they have no reason to give in. Sure the owners of the Rangers, Maple Leafs and Montreal want to settle this but about 10 owners in the league will never give the players what they want. So all you Canadians can have a good cry now and hope there is a season next year. I'll be crying with you because my NY Rangers won't be able to win the cup this year!!!

hockey for most of the united states is like soccer, people just aren't that interested in it, sure it's fun to watch a game live, but trying to get people to watch on tv no thanks,  it really wouldn't suprise me if the nhl just went away for good just like the north american soccer league back in the day, the mls which will go away eventually, the wnba which will go away and arena football which will be gone soon,  nfl nba and mlb are the only 3 sports that will make it in the long run

The NHL might fall with the cancelation of this season. Maybe not right away, of course. 5 years down the road, I don't see those teams I listed above sticking around. The2004-2005 lockout destroyed the Dallas Stats. They went from selling out year after year to 5,000 people a game. They want the other way of the Blackhawks.

A 12 team super league with 8 teams in Canada and teams in NYC, Boston, Detroit and Philadelphia would be fantastic. That becomes a greater possibility if this season is lost!
Still far away but it becomes possible.

Hell, Research in Motion is coming on a bit, again. If the blackberry 10 makes a splash and saves the company. The could take over apples dominance.
Balsillie would have his opening to start a new league. Even without the name brands if he could pull a WHA and attract a star,
Let's say Connor McDavid in 3 years! The kid just signed a 15  million deal with reebok. These young kids are more prominent than ever and they have a choice whether to stick with the NHL union or not!

Flutie, I'm good with all the above but why did you leave out the great old franchise of the Chicago Blackhawks and all their great fans? The number would have to be 16 teams, 8 in Canada and 8 in the States. What do you think of this?

Toronto      New York
Hamilton    Boston
Montreal    Detroit
Quebec     Philadelphia
Winnipeg   Washington
Calgary      Chicago
Edmonton  St. Louis
Vancouver  Los Angeles

Kings and Blues fans have supported their teams very well since 1967 and at times through some lean years. The Kings would also swallow up the new California hockey fans born out of the Ducks and Sharks. The Capitals fans for a number of years supported one of the most horrific hockey teams the NHL has ever seen, and continue to keep that building pretty full despite numerous playoff failures.

I know. Chicago should be included as an original six but that is not a hockey town!
Hockey is such a niche sport there.
The team that I omitted, Minnesota!
They should get a crack from the start!
Chicago has shown support for the wolves. Maybe I'm wrong there and it had a lot more to do with past ownership! So I'm just thinking aloud here. I don't proofread ( thanks, Iproducts ) and I just spit out ideas!

God knows Bettman is going to need a ton of creative ideas if he wants his NHL to remain viable long term with this mess!

16 teams would work great although I would omit blues, lowest ticket prices in the NHL! They are losing a ton of money despite selling out!

Washington is a Redskins town! Without revenue sharing, hockey can not work there!

Maybe it's not as big as it is over there in BC where you are but it could also be because we have...the Cubs, White Soxs and Bears. Hockey is everything to the people of Canada. Hockey however in the states is not. But to say that Chicago is not a hockey town is ignorant

Pour teams in to Canada and go north to Alaska & Yukon east to Halifax Charlottetown Red deer out west Sask Victoria Moose jaw then have CBC involved again as well as CTV & TSN SP NET NBC for the remainder of American teams Quebec City gets a team too.
We don't need ESPN then REGINA another team

PS we could see the Expos comeback in MLB up here in Canada Too

Cool story, bro.

My good buddy plays on the Blackhawks but please go on and  continue putting words in my mouth.
Anything else?

The expos and the Blackhawks have a ton of parallels. The expos sold out every game during the 80's drawing millions of fans per year. The strike and terrible ownership crushed all that.

The Wirtz family had a history I think?

I would never call Montreal a baseball town!

What the f*ck are you fool blabbering about? Jesus Christ!!! A small rollback on players salaries (5-10%) and a small increase in revenue sharing will solve everything.
