If JVR can get healthy I really like the move for Toronto.

Philly needs a D so they fill that need. Also perhaps making room for Bobby Ryan?

From a Leafs perspective, this would have looked a lot better if it happened before JVR got injured last year. He just decided to pass up on hip surgery and try to rehab it instead. If it doesn't work out, he might be not be fully healthy for a long time.

JVR is loaded with talent. Up to this point his desire to use that talent to its fullest capability has been questionable at best. He has also been pretty injury prone. If he stays healthy and starts giving it his all consistently then the Leafs should win the deal. Those are very big ifs though.

For years young players have been leaving the Leafs organization and becoming much better players elsewhere. Schenn will now have better hockey people around him to help his game to develop, and I expect his game to progress instead regress like it seemed to be doing in Toronto the last couple of seasons. The deal could turn out to be better for the Flyers then it first appears on the surface.

Ofcourse as you mentioned wiggins this frees up cash for the Bobby Ryan pursuit as well, and if they do get him, then JVR's absence will quickly become a distant memory.

I remember Bob and Barclay Plager. they were right out of central casting for "Slap Shot" in fact, the character of Backlay Donaldson was based on a composite of the brothers.

at the risk of dating myself, it's not so new...

rocket and pocket richard..bobby and dennis hull...frank and peter mahovlich...duane and brent sutter...rich and ron sutter...peter, anton and marian stastny with the old nordiques...rob and scott niedermayer with the ducks...the hatchers in dallas...mark and marty howe with the whale, the maloneys at the madison square...dale and mark hunter with the caps...

stand to be corrected but i believe denis and jean potvin played together on the island during the NYI glory years...

and...of course...

how can we possibly forget thelma and louise, the sedin sisters...

not sure if my hockey history is spot-on but going back a few decades the bentleys, max and doug, were a potent pair in chicago, and i believe became the first brothers to lead the league in scoring...

...

actually in 1971 there were three plagers who played together wearing the bluenote: barclay, bob, and billy...

the 'battling brothers' were in no small part responsible for the genesis of the broad street bullies in philly...st. louis in the early years regularly outmuscled its expansion brethren including the flyers, prompting philly's front office to make the conscious decision to beef up its team so it would no longer be intimidated...

the rest as they say is history

Lost in all this is the fact the Leafs just acquired another American for a Canadian. Don Cherry should be loving that...

The loafs are getting good at drafting and trading for injured players.  Congrats to the Flyers for winning this one sided trade and getting a young and very good dman.  Wait and see.

How do you figure it was one sided other than the fact you hate the Leafs? JVR is a power forward who will score 30 goals a year playing on one of the top two lines. I'm not sure if you have watched Schenn play much but he can be a turnover machine when pressured and contributes nothing as far as offense goes.

schenn was put into a situation in toronto that virtually set him up for failure: a defence-first guy in an offence-oriented lineup that ensured him virtually no help and only served to magnify the mistakes any young player is going to make...

maybe that could have changed with more time under carlyle..but...the leafs don't really have time, and the environment there for schenn was probably poisoned beyond repair...

bottom line: this is a developing player whose skill set (make no mistake, the value of a guy who can play an effective stay-at-home D should never be under-estimated) makes him an ideal fit as a depth guy within a responsible system...i expect him to thrive in philly where he won't be as exposed, or expected to do too much...

as for van riemsdyk, burke obviously isn't scared of players who've had injury issues, and this kid when healthy has a pretty nice upside...win-win trade on both sides IMO
