#1 Posted: 11/4/2011 5:38:39 PM 30th in the league in Penalty Killing
25th in the league in Shots on Goal per game
23rd in the leage in Shots Against per game
have been outshoted in 9 of their 13 games
just warning everyone that they have done it with smoke and mirrors so far.... if they continue to be at the bottom of the league in shots for and shots against it will catch up with them sooner rather than later. just a warning |

#2 Posted: 11/4/2011 5:47:03 PM 3RD in the NHL at 3.38 GPG is no fluke and trumps all the other stats - but thanks for the warning sean
They aren't winning the President's Trophy or any other silverware, but they are a playoff team and won't fade much |

it is defintley a fluke, they would have an all time nhl record shooting percentages at this rate... they can't and won't keep that GPG up unless they start generating more pucks to the net |

#7 Posted: 11/4/2011 5:57:57 PM for starters, guys like Iginla, Kovalchuk, Oveckin or Kessel score at a higher rate
But I agree more shots would help and not hurt their cause ...

#8 Posted: 11/4/2011 6:01:18 PM Perhaps. But...for once...the Leaf bashers in this forum have gone into hiding for now. I fully expect them to return when the Leafs lose a few in a row.
One thing is for sure...the Leafs have been able to outscore their mistakes so far.
That said, I don't think anyone (even the most optimistic Leaf fan) thinks that they will continue this pace.

I would agree but right now as a team they are scoring @ 13% shooting percentage..... the best players (not teams) shot around that for a year.... this rate is unsustianable |

#10 Posted: 11/4/2011 6:06:04 PM Leafs are shocking the league right now but they are not this good come 2 months later. They will squeek in and make the playoffs finishing maybe 7 or 8 when the other teams start picking up the pace.
I hope I am wrong but I just cant see them being this good with the pieces they have and I am from Toronto my self. |

#12 Posted: 11/4/2011 6:08:12 PM They have done well but have faced atrocious goaltending the last two games. Like I said before the season started, they will be a solid team this year and anything but battling it out for the 7th or 8th spot will surprise me. Maybe they should give this Scrivens guy a go at the starting job....I don't think Gustavsson is really that good.

not trying to bash, they remind me of my indians this year in bases, they are overachieving and they can't keep this, may not be for another month but they will eventually regress to the .500 they are. |

#14 Posted: 11/4/2011 6:12:03 PM so if their penalty kill gets better and they take a few more shots they might be great all season |

If last night is ANY indication the question really is between Reimer and Scrivens |

#17 Posted: 11/4/2011 6:15:57 PM The PK is not killing them cuz their penalty taking has improved a lot since last season - if that reverses they will suffer large. |

Their PK has consistently been among the leagues worst since the lockout...its ridiculous...i dont know how many assistant coaches they have gone through because Wilson clearly does not have the answer.

#19 Posted: 11/4/2011 6:44:14 PM Steckel will be a help on the PK once they figure out how to compliment him. Dupuis is still proving himself on that unit, ditto for Brown. It's not pretty. But your best penalty killer is your goalie and the Leafs have had pretty shitty goaltending most nights (and yes that means Reimer too - he's 42nd in the league in GAA). |

#20 Posted: 11/4/2011 6:44:20 PM True...their poor penalty killing and/or defensive lapses are surely going to catch up to them eventually.
Still...their 9-3-1 is certainly better than their 5-5-3 start after 13 games last year (or their 1-7-5 start in 2009-10). In other words...y can't take those 19 points away from them.

Steckel has been a bigger key than most (including myself) would have thought. Take the Pittsburgh game for instance...4-3 late in the game and the Pens pull their goalie. The Leafs ice the puck. Faceoff comes back to the Leaf end with no line change for them but Steckel wins the faceoff easily and they eventually clear it out while the time runs to 0:00. In previous seasons, they'd lose the faceoff and give up the tying goal before losing in OT/SO.
Steckel being on the ice late in these such cases has been HUGE so far.

actually Cleveland.... i think they are a 7-10 place team in the east at best. should be some nice money fading them at some point this season as they are on a quick rise to being overvalued |

#24 Posted: 11/4/2011 7:11:21 PM They are usually a good fade as a fave, but constitute great value most nights as a dog. GL with the fade. I respect that you were respectful in your criticism (a first on here). |

#25 Posted: 11/4/2011 7:16:47 PM I actually think that all the bad thngs in the original post can be easily corrected with a little better coaching and execution. In fact, I think the Leafs have another gear still as their goalies and D can defiantely play better. Sure, Kessel and Lupul are over-producing and that will come down to earth but lets face it, as much as you expect them to drop, whats to say they don't improve on all the points you make. |
