Actually it depends if you're referring to 'homers' or actual honest solid broadcasters. There's a heck of a difference.
In my opinion nobody will ever come close to the late Danny Gallivan for honest solid play by play announcers. He was & still is the best bar-none!
When it comes to downright 'homers', I'm not sure if I've ever heard or come across anyone as bad as the late Bruins radio man Bob Wilson. That guy had to have worn a Bruins jersey while calling the Boston games for crying out loud. He was such a 'homer' that he was comical.
Today, I don't mind the likes of Pittsburgh's Mike Lang or as Tinman mentioned Doc Emrick. Blues broadcaster Kelly ranks as a broadcaster who makes the games exciting. There's a big difference between the actual play by play voice and the color guys as they can be mentioned in two separate categories for that matter. I believe the Wings color man you're referring to is Micky Redmond.
There are a couple of hated color guys on my list as well and one of them belongs to the Penguins duo, thankfully I haven't got his name. A close second is the color guy for the SJ Sharks, who is totally pathetic to be blunt. Both Craig Simpson and Ray 'moron' Ferarro are also included among this group. The bottom line is none of them went to broadcasting school; it was simply a matter of them being former players and they were given a job.
