Magnolia is going through a rough patch right now, but that doesn't mean Alaska coach Tim Cone is ready to count the pre-season favorite out.
"Magnolia is still the favorite to win this conference," said Cone of the Beverage Masters who will clash with the Aces today in the Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
"We know they'll be ready. We'll have to be at the top of our game to have a chance," added Cone.
The fact Magnolia has lost two of its last three games only tends to make Cone more wary, his concerns not soothed by the fact Alaska has won three straight.
For his part, Beverage Masters coach Siot Tanquingcen knows the yawning gap between the teams should be an extra motivation for his wards.
"Alaska is playing well while we're struggling," he said. "This game is going to be a big test for us, if we could come back strong from a bad game."
Tanquingcen was referring to his team's 94-100 loss to Talk N Text last Saturday, a game in which Asi Taulava dominated in the endgame by scoring seven of his team's last nine points.
That win enabled TNT to climb into a tie for third with Magnolia before the Phone Pals grabbed solo second with a 115-111 overtime win over Red Bull last Wednesday for a 4-2 win-loss slate.
What worries Tanquingcen most is his team's inability to consistently get its rhythm on both ends of the floor, main reason for the Beverage Masters' slide from a 2-0 start. Despite a power-packed lineup that boasts Danny Seigle, Lordy Tugade and LA Tenorio on offense and Rico Villanueva, Dondon Hontiveros and Willie Wilson on defense, the Beverage Masters are on a tailspin.
Unbeaten Purefoods has no such problems and will more likely jack its record to 6-0 when it takes on Coca-Cola, loser of three straight, in the other game.
The Giants' franchise-record roll has been aided by the all-around brilliance of a lineup anchored on James Yap, Kerby Raymundo and Romel Adducul.
