However, it’s likely just as important that you don’t convince yourself that you are caught in their net before you make a decision.
Some odds look like traps, others don’t, and sometimes it’s tough to know the difference. But simply because you lose a bet does not necessarily mean you fell into some sort of quicksand that the oddsmakers poured in your path.
Sometimes, you just make an incorrect pick. Even so, it never hurts to analyze and try to pinpoint where you went wrong.
And if the Lakers go on to lose the Nuggets, I’ll be doing just that. I’m usually not one to post blogs about my plays or handicapping strategy – mostly because I don’t believe in giving it away for free – but I’ve got to tell you I find major value in the Lakers at -130 (www.bookmaker.com) to win the series.
This is a better discount than when the doughnuts go stale in the Wal Mart bakery ($1.49 for a dozen there). Seriously, I had considered betting the Lakers at -280 before the series and now I am glad I waited, for just this reason. If the Nuggets end up taking my money, so be it, I’ll tip my cap and clean the lint out of my wallet.
But don’t count the Lakers out just yet. I just have a hard time believing that Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson, who have championship pedigrees, and the rest of the Lakers are going to go down without a fight. I loved the defiant look in Bryant’s eyes as he addressed the media after the Game 2 loss.
“We weren’t the best road team in the NBA for no reason, remember that,” he coolly warned all viewers.
And I believe him. Just think: If the Lakers can steal one in Denver, then it’s back to a best-of-three with two games in Los Angeles. Although it’s certainly possible for Denver to win on the Lakers’ home court again, I’ll believe it when I see it.
Yes, I've seen the games, and I give the Nuggets props for how far they have come because of the addition of Chauncey Billups and the growth of Carmelo Anthony. I just think they are still a year away from having the experience and mental toughness to reach the NBA Finals.
Thus, for the first time in my Covers.com blogging history, I’d like to announce that my POD is Lakers to win the series at -130. Bet this and you can take it to the hizzy, shizzy, or whatever it is you are taking it to these days.
Best of luck to everyone … GL all … and every other acronym that is short for, “Have fun gambling.”
Peace out.
