#1 Posted: 1/10/2009 5:22:59 PM This game is a prime example of vegas riding a teams momentum into the next game. What do I mean by that? Look at when the Knicks beat Boston a week ago. New York just defeated one of the top teams in the league and their next opponent was the lowly Thunder. Couple that with the low -2.5 spread and everyone and their mother was on the Knicks. Result? Thunder win the game outright.
Now we look at tonights matchup with Detroit and Utah. Detroit just came off of an impressive victory over the Denver Nuggets in game they probably should have lost. Detroit is also playing some of there best basketball of the season heading into tonight, going 8-2 in their last 10 games. Yet the spread is a beefy -9/9.5 for Utah? It just doesn't make any sense when you look at it... especially when Joe Blow public looks at it.
I hate to sound like some arrogant know it all, but I've just seen so many times before.
Any opinions would be welcome on this one... |

#2 Posted: 1/10/2009 5:28:51 PM yeah i think they win for sure, but dropping 10 points you never know in the NBA. Iverson could drop 40 |

#3 Posted: 1/10/2009 5:33:10 PM I had Knicks in that game vs Thunder, and it was just a bad play for me.
Detroit has the defense to keep this game close (something Knicks don't have).
Utah destroyed a good Hornets teams (who were coming off a SU victory at Lakers) and they were -4.5 home favorites. Now the line is double that, and I think is because of that game against Hornets, and the same circumstance as this matchup.
Books caught up and now line has been -9, -9.5, and -10 (earlier).
I am leaning toward Pistons and UNDER here.

#4 Posted: 1/10/2009 5:34:17 PM Totally agree.
I had Utah circled tonight and then Vegas drops this 9 point spread on me. I would have thought 7 at most, probably 6/6.5. Definitely like the Jazz, but those points are more than I wanted to lay. |

VGPOP you just hit the nail on the head. There's really no value in the line either way.

#10 Posted: 1/10/2009 6:44:51 PM I completely agree. Last night before the line came out utah was the only team I liked. I expected about -5 or so. Now I see -9 with everyone pounding Detroit. The line hasn't moved all day, and you know Detroit is a popular team for people to bet on. The books aren't stupid, if Detroit has a solid chance the line would have dropped. Most of us who bet do it as a hobby, Vegas does it for a living and has been doing it for years.
Needless to say I'm not locked in yet, trying to make sure Tenn covers -2.5. Even if they don't ill prob still get on the NBA tonight and Utah is all I like so far. Any leans out there for 7 PM NBA ?. |
