If they run, and kick the FG, they most likely win the game.

Instead, they get a holding penalty and dont score.

28-20 at the time, NE had 2 timeouts.

Incredible.

I mean what are they trying to do there?

Even on 2nd and 10 at the 23 with 4:30 left.

Why are they throwing it?

it was like mcdaniels from FH went over to the falcons bench at HT

They lost it by giving up 31 unanswered points.

While I am on the subject....

I am not impressed by the almighty Belickek either.

The amount of time they took on their last three drives (before the final TD drive) was incredible.

It was like they won only because they werent as dumb as ATL.

Yep! Amazing that Nfl coaches can be so clueless. After the Jones catch at the 20, they could have ran it three times and kicked. But they take a huge sack and then the hold...it is unreal!

I agree, Atlanta lost on the 3rd and 23 play.

Had the refs threw the flag for the face mask on the tackle, that would have wiped out the holding call.

Chances were pretty good that the Falcons get positive yardage on their next play and then kick a FG.

Yup......run the ball there and set yourself up for a field goal try. Do that and the game is pretty much over. I could not believe what Atlanta was doing at that point. Slinging passes ......wow

I just went back and watched this 3rd down play.

It is incredible everything going on on this play THAT COULD HAVE DECIDED THE GAME.

First off, they completed a 10 yard pass out of bounds.  But there was a holding call.

If there is no holding call - ATL wins the SB.

BUT

There was also a facemask that they missed on the tackle.  It was a clear FM.  If they call that, ATL wins the SB.

Incredible.

Just said the same thing Van. This was gift wrapped for NE. The sack/fumble by Ryan set up the collapse. Then the epic loss of yardage to blow a FG attempt. Give the patriots credit for taking advantage but My God what a collapse.

Yes, just saw the missed FM call.

If they make that call - ATL wins the SB.

Incredible.

Chewy - it was really a matter of who was less stupid.

It was a very strange game.

NE got the ball down by 19 starting the 4th qtr - and they took 5.5 minutes off of the clock and kicked a FG!  They were huddling, and not in any rush really at all.

99 out of a 100 that is a surefire way to lose a game.

But ATL insisted on giving it to them.

Atlanta lost the SB before it even started cuz it was scripted for them to lose... Before the game even started, Brady was all happy but Ryan looked "nervous"... Brady knew NE was winning and Ryan knew Atlanta was going to lose.. You dont just blow a 25 point lead just like that, just like the Warriors blowing a 3 - 1 lead yet dominating the first 3 out of 4 games..

yes, and also what isn't mentioned is that on the ryan fumble, it was third and 1. he didn't even need to drop back for a long time. run the fkn ball, or a quick screen, pitchout, whatever. Why the darn you calling for a 7 step drop back pass?????

that whole sequence after the jones catch will go down as one of the worst coaching decisions, right along with not giving it to lynch

The offensive guy also had a face mask though. He ripped off the defender's helmet. ATL still would have had to make a long FG even without the hold.

They had a boatload of chances. Pats had to score 31 unanswered points. They had almost the entire 2nd half to do things differently.

PS-when NE kicked that FG, ESPN had ATL at 99.6% chance of winning.

offsetting penalties if they call the facemask, still a chance they don't get a field goal, it would have been a 52 yarder if the falcons don't get any yards on the replayed third down

Exactly.

On third and one, they drop him back and he fumbles.

It wasnt like ATL was having trouble running the ball.

Crazy.

Clearly Quinn didnt learn anything losing the Super Bowl to patriots when he was D coordinator with seattle and they threw it on the 1 yard line ..... same mistake tonight .... need 1 yard in 4th quarter of super bowl and you are running the ball ....... Shannahan off to SF with that taste in his mouth ,...... horrible play calling
