As much as the Chargers' move to Los Angeles angered San Diego, it angered NFL executives and owners just as much, if not more.
Since
the move was announced, the NFL has been "besides itself," in the words
of one league source. "There are a ton of owners very upset that [the
Chargers] moved," one source said. The source added that the NFL wants
the Chargers to move back, though nobody believes that possibility is
realistic.
But some NFL owners and some league officials are still
hoping that, now that the move has been made official, Chargers
chairman Dean Spanos will wake up one morning soon, recognize this
situation has been "bungled so bad" and take his team back to San Diego,
where it spent the past 56 years. Again, the chances are at best remote
that this happens.
But there are owners and league officials
still praying that the longest of long shots comes in and the Chargers
bolt back to San Diego.

I wish ex Charger Ledarius Green could be sent back to San Diego also. He told the Steelers that San Diego team doctors misdiagnosed him with having concussions...so they sign him for 4 years and $20 million and the dude couldn't play until week 10 because he had bad headaches.
He played he played in 6 games and made some impact plays but now he is out with...guess what? He got a concussion on a routine tackle downfield over the middle and it did not seem to be a full on head shot and he has been in protocol since December 18th.
What a wasteful signing IMO. I heard an interview today of Green and he was asked about his concussion problems in San Diego and he said: "Oh, that was another lifetime ago"...yeah, before he decided to hide the fact that he was damaged goods.

Supposedly the NFL's plan at this point is to wait for Spanos to bankrupt himself with this move which would ultimately force him to sell the team. Then the new owners would return the team to SD and build a new stadium in Mission Valley.
Spanos is "dirt poor" in comparison to the rest of the league owners. His other assets outside of the Chargers "only" total around $300M.
The Chargers will be operating at a significant loss for the next 2 seasons while playing in a tiny soccer stadium. That's already guaranteed and baked into the numbers.
Then, once the Inglewood stadium is finished, their viability in L.A. as tenants will be based 100% upon how many PSL's they can sell. Assuming they struggle with PSL sales (a very safe assumption), more red ink will follow for Spanos at the operational level. With continued failed sales of PSL's, Spanos will probably be able to stay afloat in the Inglewood stadium for about 3 years before eventually having to sell.
So we're talking about 5 years from now before the Chargers should be back in San Diego.
