I believed what most sheep believe about oddsmakers trying to establish a betting line (spread) that evenly splits the money, and they get to collect the vig. This, my friends, is the biggest fallacy in sports gambling. We have two very recent examples that prove, for any of you paying attention, that on some contests (certainly not all contests) the oddsmakers are taking a betting interest in one of the sides.
The AFC championship line was just too tasty for most sports guessers to pass up. Laying ONLY 3 points with Tom Brady and the Patriots? The public (sheep) could not get their money down fast enough. I think the split was about 74% of the money on the Patriots, 26% on the lowly Broncos. A lot of money went to money heaven that day.
Then, after you all licked your wounds and rummaged around in your couch cushions looking for whatever you could scrounge, you went for that Panther line of ONLY 4.5, hook line and sinker! Superman was going to get you paid!
A few of us on here were telling you how wrong you were, and enduring your derisive comments. Well the split was about the same, with most of you guys watching your money go to money heaven, AGAIN.
When you get done feeling sorry for yourselves, and have a moment of clarity, ask yourselves WHY the oddsmakers did not adjust the line to balance the action 50/50? Maybe they would have had to move it to 10 points to do it (and that still would not have been enough for the Panther backers to get paid).
Understand people, oddsmakers are VERY good at what they do. They understand what the public perception is and KNOW how to hang lines that are simply irresistible for most sports guessers.
The truly amazing thing to me is, they do it again and again and again and still get YOUR money.
