For many decades now in the UK we've really tried to get into american football. TV has played its part trying to stimulate interest. Myself and friends have read up, watched games and endless American sports programmes yet all of us have come to the conclusion its pretty boring. There seems more emphasis on commentators and 'has been's' talking the game up and dissecting it afterwards than actually time spent playing the game! Its all about razz-a-mataz than the actual sport? Here in the UK football and rugby are dominant, a continuous  90 minute-ish sporting attraction split in two halves without any interference or commercials. Do you think its a cultural thing?

it's because
the average NFL game features just 10 minutes 43 seconds of action. Commercials account for nearly 60 minutes of the three hour affairs. And when the networks are showing the game, the bulk of the time is spent either on replays or shots of players huddling, in pre-snap formations or "milling about."

Yup, soccer is back and forth with almost no scoring.  Rather watch commercials during an NFL game.

This a typical response from the UK. Why does the NFL continue to throw games at them while they alienate their very strong fan base in Canada? C'mon NFL give us some regular season games other than the Buffalo Bills.

Very simple, if you don't like it , don't watch it.

I would rather watch the Titans face the Jaguars on Thursday night football then the best soccer game in the world.

Haha, loving the comments my friends out there. I really do think the commercial thing and all the hangers on talking up the game is the real spoiler. For us here, we're not used to being swamped every few minutes with commercials n crap it totally distracts from the sport.I enjoy the 'game' but its lost in all the crap around it and i suppose the irrelevance to us of the commercials. We see it more because fortunately, our favourite sports here whether it be soccer as you call it 'football to us'  or the real man's game 'rugby' is aired on our screens where the game is fundamental and you may get 5-10 mins at half time of commercials and pundits. Surely, anyone watching their sport can see my argument there? Your sports have been taken over! For the record though, we will be up in the early hours here to watch the super bowl as much as i get annoyed with the crap we do love the 'game'.

American Football is the best sport in the world.

And this is coming from a Soccer season ticket holder.

Soccer is great and I couldn't live without it, but NFL/CFB is one level above. It's the mix of men's sports, complexity and the American art of living and breathing sports in the most extravagant manner.

Football is the perfect social sport.

20-40 seconds after every play, you can turn to a friend & talk about why that play stunk or was great.  No other sport provides this opportunity.  That's why so many of us think we know the game.

I also vote for another Titans-Jags game over any boring friggin soccer game.  And you can throw rugby in there too for being boring.  "real men"?  Sounds like you need to go to the parade.

There is an art to watching american football. Have something else to do about half the time.

you can

feed your fat face
scratch your nuts
go search for more food
watch some porn on your laptop
switch to another show
check your fantasy league scores
get another beer
let the dog out
coalesce the garbage around your lazy boy chair into one spot
scratch a bit further north

come on whats wrong with you

Do you wager on American Football or play fantasy football at all? As much as football is my life every Fall and early winter, I can't imagine any GROWN MAN being a die hard football fan without gambling and even fantasy a part of the equasion.
