Arizona
New Orleans -3

I can’t make up my mind. I keep going back and fourth. I like the Saint’s depth at every position, but we all know depth means jack in preseason. On paper, the Saints are clearly the favorite, but it doesn’t mean they will show up for a preseason game.

I think the Saints are gonna put up points, but the Saints D scares the hell out of me. I think since the Cards are in a battle for the starting QB, I think Kolb, and Skeleton are going to play a quarter a piece, and that means they will be playing at a high level.

I believe the Cards have a better defense. Joe Vitt is basically a rookie head coach, which scares the hell out of me. Ken Whisenhunt is clearly the better coach to have his team ready to play. For some strange reason, I get the feeling that the Saints might try to take all of their pent up anger about the suspensions out on the Cards.

What’s the play here fellas? Thoughts…

I'm leaning to the Cardinals with the QB competition. Brees will probably play one or two series, then you have Daniels, Canfield, and McCown. I would keep an eye on the New Orleans newspaper. Hopefully he will give us some insight to how long he plans on playing Brees. If Payton was there, I know he wouldn't risk the starters long, but this interim coach may want to see more so he can evaluate the team better. I won't be jumping on this one until I see some kind of game plan. The Saints handled them 24-10 in 2008 which was Wisenhunt's 2nd year as head coach.

Vegasflyer1 that’s exactly what I was thinking. As soon as I saw the line, I thought about the QB competition. But, if you look at the depth on the roster. You can see that the Saints have a clear edge, which is why they are the favorite. McCown is a veteran and Chase took all the reps, while Bree's was holding out, so we know he has had plenty of reps with the offense. You don’t think there will be extra motivation for the saints because of the suspensions.

That is one thing about the Saints. Brees will be doing all that hoop and hollering trying to get these guys in a frenzy for a preseason game. If they feel they have some weakness since the suspensions, they may want to look like they haven't missed a beat. I don't think the risk is worth the reward if they do. The offensive line concerns me for the Cardinals. If they are bad, the QB competition won't matter much.

Too much thinking going on here.First preseason game, flip a coin.Pretty tough to handicap 3rd and 4th string players.

Vegasflyer1…Yeah, the Saints have one of the best, if not, the best o-lines in the league. So, getting pressure on the Saints QB’s won’t be easy, regardless if it’s back up’s, they are well coached, but the Cards are struggling at that spot. As soon as I saw the line, I was on the Cards. Then I started to think about Brees saying they don’t believe in us and it’s time to step up.

The whole it’s us vs. the commissioner and the world speech. In the Cards annual red and white practice, the D dominated the Cards O. Skelton went 2-for-10 for 25 yards and Kolb went 9-16 for 91 yards and a TD, but Kolb threw two INT’s.

That makes me think the Cards O is not flowing right now. I’m pretty confident that the saints O will do OK next Sunday, it’s the Saint D that worries me. The Cards D is the biggest strength of the Cards. The total is 35, so it’s hard to get a vibe on what the odds-makers expect to see.

The question is do we bet on the Saints O or the Cards D with a QB competition?

Gilligansisland - I hear ya man, it is hard to cap 3rd and 4th stringers, but it’s football. I’ve been dying to talk about football for 6 months. I don’t care that it’s preseason, I just want to talk football, and cap football. I still wanna win, even if it’s just preseason ball and only a few bucks.

yeah, preseason is nothing to bet the house on, but there is plenty of games to pick your spots. Do you remember that crazy HOF in 2009. It was Tennessee and Buffalo, the Titans opened at -2.5 and you could get it for about a week. Game day it moves to 3 and I saw it as high as 3.5 I loved Tennessee here with Fisher and his trick plays. I was lucky to get it at 2.5, but several of my friends didn't. Tennessee is up by 5, 21-16, looks like they are going to cover with less than a minute left, 4th down and the punter runs 30 or so yards backward to give up the safety and use the clock. Final score 21-18...I am sure we will see some crazy stuff this year.

Vegasflyer1… Yeah, the most I would ever bet on a preseason game is 100 bucks. During the preseason coaches go for it on 4th down, try trick plays, and don’t really care about winning. That’s what makes it tough to bet on. It is pretty much a coin flip, but you gotta try and gather as much info as possible to try to find an edge. I would bet on preseason games, if I won, cash out, and go play blackjack, video poker, or those giant TV slots.

TheBallDontLie … Hell yeah, that was a cool play. I remember that somewhat. I was pretty fuckin drunk at that point in the casino.

Bets …I hear ya, bro, I don’t wanna really bet on it, but its boring watching preseason games without money on the line. I would rather watch preseason ball over Canadian football. That’s for sure. I can’t wait for Sunday. Then there is football on Thursday and then my team the Cowboys on Monday.

MYSTICRICH…what I told bets answers your post.

Best time of the year here in the beautiful city of Canton Ohio!! Love this time of year. Walk from my house and just party around the stadium at all the houses around. Kind of reminds me how Buffalo is... Such a good time. Prob will score some cheap tixs and throw a little wager on the game. My only theory I have is that NO will be a little fired up for this one just to prove all these suspensions are nothing and that they still know how to win with the players and there head coach.

I’m not really a totals bettor, but the reason I was leaning towards the over was because of the quarterbacks playing. And the offensive talent that will be on the field. I can easily see each team scoring at least 20 to cover the over.

Betting the over seems like the safest bet to me at this moment. That way I don’t have to cheer for a winner. I can just sit back, smoke one, knock back a few cold ones, and just hope for some points.

The thing that has me uneasy is the NFL referee holdout. When money is on the line and there are rookie refs on the field, that makes me a little uneasy. All of us are going to be looking out for BS calls and missed calls.

I play the lottery every week. This is way more fun than the lottery.

We know who Kolb and Skelton are. We know who Brees and Chase are. We know they will be playing the first and second quarter. I decided to study who might be playing the third and fourth quarters.

Saints third string QB Luke McCown has played in 20 regular season games, but his recent preseason starts, weren’t that impressive. He played for the Jags last season. He played in two preseason games for the Jags and was 12/18, Pct. 66.7, 133 Yds, 7.4 avg., 2 td’s, 0 int, 125.5 rate.

Saints fourth string QB Sean Canfield played for Oregon State
NFL Draft: 2010 / Round: 7 / Pick: 239
He has never played in a NFL game.

The Cards third string QB Richard Bartel went to Tarleton State and is in his fourth season. He played in every preseason game last season and was pretty-damn good. He was 37/54, Pct. 68.5, 530 Yds, 9.8 avg., 5 td’s, 2 int, 115.5 rate.

The Cards fourth string QB Ryan Lindley played for San Diego State
NFL Draft: 2012 / Round: 6 / Pick: 185

What scares me is Ken Whisenhunt (7-13) is ATS in the preseason. When making NFL preseason bets. It’s smarter to bet on a coach that is trying to prove something to his team and bosses. Since Joe Vitt is the interim coach, he might try to prove he is worthy of the job and that the suspensions mean nothing.

However, I feel in this spot that the Cards third string QB Richard Bartel might play the entire second half. He has played hungry the last four preseason games he's played in. After thinking about it, I decided to change my mind and bet on the Cards +3. Even the Cards fourth string QB, Ryan Lindley, seems like a better bet than Saints fourth string QB, Sean Canfield.

The Cards strength is defense and the trio of Kolb, Skelton, and Bartel is the better bet, IMO.

Three more days till game time, can’t wait!

Maybe Saints 1st half,  the Cardinals QB battle is nothing to get excited over, I'm thinking Brees will make good use of his snaps for the prime time audience.
