WILL SAINTS ROAD WOES CONTINUE IN THE PLAYOFFS

We’re not here to take anything away from Drew Brees and the Saints, who have been putting up numbers like they’re a Big 12 team playing Kutztown State the last few weeks.

But we also can’t help noticing what a shitty set of defenses they played this year. Start with the NFC South, where Atlanta was so-so and Tampa Bay and Carolina were embarrassing, and add in their schedule-mandated friends from the NFC North, and you’ve got a very soft bunch.

By either key measure – yards per play allowed or points per game – the Saints only faced two above-average defenses: Houston and Jacksonville.

Now, to be fair, they fared well against both, averaging 478 yards and 31.5 points – comparable to their season average of 467 yards and 34.2 points.

They haven’t seen anything like the 49ers, though, a team that went 11 straight weeks without allowing more than 395 yards or 21 points until the Rams put up 27 in the season finale. And the two tough games the Saints played came were in Week 3 and Week 4, meaning it’s literally been three months since they’ve been tested.

Add in the road factor and it’s going to be like going from the hot tub to the ice bath for New Orleans.

GIANTS SCORING DIFFERENTIAL IN THE REGULAR SEASON

Since the 1970 merger, it’s not that uncommon for a team to make the playoffs despite being outscored on the aggregate (34 times in 42 seasons), but it was more common in the 1980s and 1990s. Since 2000, only five teams had done it: the 2004, 2006 and 2010 Seahawks, the 2006 Giants and the 2004 Rams.

None of those teams will go down in the annals of football history, to be sure.

Of the five, none of them made it past this stage in the playoffs, and the two that got here (2004 and 2010 Seattle) both got smoked after winning their openers.

Of the 34 playoff teams since 1970, the last team from this group to even make it to the conference championship game was the 1996 Jaguars, who shocked the Broncos in Denver. None of them have ever made the Super Bowl.

Of course, Eli Manning and the Giants have shown the ability to play (ahem) giant-killer. They ran one of the greatest gauntlets of all time in 2007 after going just +22 in the regular season. To do it again, they’ll have to beat a 15-1 team, a 13-3 team, and most likely a 12-4 or 13-3 team in the AFC title game.

If they do it, clear a spot for lil’ bro Manning in Canton. Maybe Coach Coughlin as well.

YARDS PER PLAY ALLOWED BY THE PATRIOTS DEFENSE

With the Patriots, it’s not exactly a shock that their defense is at the center of their fatal flaw.

We really could have picked from about 10 different key defensive indicators that explain why this team (or the Packers for that matter) has a minimal chance of winning the Super Bowl this year.

But it doesn’t get much more shocking than 6.18 yards per play allowed. It wasn’t the worst number in the league this year (again, think Packers), but even ranked fourth-worst in 2011 it was still one of the 10 worst numbers ever.

The new kickoff rules help explain why total yardage numbers have gone up so markedly from 2010 to 2011 – more yards to cover per touchdown drive -- but it doesn’t explain the jump in yards per play. New England was bad in this number last year (31^st), at 5.6 yards per play allowed, though, so it's no fluke. And we all remember how 2010 turned out for New England.

There really is no comparison to other seasons, because four of the six Super Bowl favorites at this point all had historically bad yardage defenses. Is it the Patriots’ fatal flaw? Hell, in this crazy season, maybe the team who gives up the most yards wins.

We wouldn’t put it past Bill Belichick to know something we don’t.

JOE FLACCOS PLAYOFF PASSING RATINGBaltimore is the most solid team remaining in the postseason. The other two candidates for the honor, Houston and San Francisco, each have flaws that Baltimore doesn&#x2019;t &#x2013; the Texans have a rookie quarterback, and the 49ers have almost no playoff experience.The Ravens have Joe Flacco, who has played in more playoff games (seven) his first three seasons than any QB in history. Except for the fact that he has been so bloody awful.The numbers are all horrific for Flacco in the postseason: 53.3 percent completions, 5.71 yards per attempt, four TDs in almost 200 dropbacks.Making things worse, Flacco is coming off a season where he stepped back (80.9 rating after getting up to 93.6 in 2010), and is facing a Houston team that was second in Defensive Passer Rating this year (69.0).Like Arian Foster, Flacco has the prospect of a pretty easy road if he can get the Ravens to the next round. But Ravens fans can&#x2019;t feel too confident that he&#x2019;ll be the man to get it done.

On the six-year anniversary of their last playoff meeting, the Denver Broncos bring their holy spiral revival to New England for the Saturday nightcap of this weekend's AFC Divisional Playoff games.

After overcoming an 8.5-point spread against the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers last week in divine fashion, the Broncos will attempt to ride the cloud (halo?) through Foxboro for an even more unlikely upset. The Patriots beat the Broncos 41-23 in Denver on December 18th, and are in the neighborhood of two-touchdown favorites for the rematch.

What will it take for the Broncos to defy the odds for the second straight week and give the dynastic Patriots their fourth straight playoff loss? Here are five things to look for. continued...............

Brady will be looking to redeem himself from his first bad playoff run. Denver will have to attack the pocket and make plays in the secondary to avoid getting shredded by the dimple-chinned golden boy or it will be a long afternoon for the Broncos&#x27; defense. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Long gone are the dominant Patriots defenses. This year&#x27;s unit was historically bad in Belichickian terms. They finished 31st in yards allowed (411 YPG) &amp; 28th in 3rd down conversions, allowing 43%. New England allowed only 21.4 points per game however, giving them the NFL&#x27;s 2nd best (yards/points) at 19.2 Yards per Point Allowed, which indicates a lot of empty yards against. The Broncos were just 23rd in the NFL with 5,066 yards from scrimmage and 25th in points scored (19.3 PPG), giving them a dreadful (yards/points again) of 16.39 Yards Per Point Scored. They&#x27;ll have to make their point-dollar stretch further and refuse to settle for field goals when they have scoring opportunities. Like last week&#x27;s Wild Card game, the Broncos will take their shots deep against the shaky New England secondary (86.11 DPR), and as long as they don&#x27;t fall in a big hole they will run the ball early and often against the Pats&#x27; 25th ranked defense, who allowed 4.62 yards per carry in the regular season.

With or without a healthy Brian Dawkins, who is nursing a neck injury and missed the first contest between the teams, Denver has given up big plays over the middle of the field all season long. Gronkowski & Aaron Hernandez combined for 13 receptions and 182 yards in the first matchup, so Brady will feed them the rock until the Broncos can prove they can stop it.

Denver surrendered a Defensive Passer Rating of 93.4 during the regular season, better than only Indianapolis, Minnesota, Carolina, & Tampa Bay (all slotted for top 10 draft picks next April.) Young safeties Quinton Carter, David Bruton, and Rafael Bush will have to play better than they did in Week 15 and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will have to continuously change and disguise his coverages as he did so well against Pittsburgh to prevent Brady from finding his groove.

There was some noise early in the week out of Denver about foul play when the St. Louis Rams let McDaniels walk away from his post and join the team he (never) grew up with for the playoff run. McDaniels has intimate knowledge of many Broncos players through coaching or drafting them, but with the relationship he's maintained with Belichick it's not hard to imagine much of this information would have been shared anyways via a late night encrypted phone call, which is commonplace in the NFL.

After watching last week's game be dominated by Hoodie Jr. imports DE Robert Ayers (2009, 18th overall), WR Demaryius Thomas (2010, 22nd), QB Tim Tebow (2010, 25th), G Zane Beadles (2010, 45th), C J.D. Walton (2010, 80th), & S David Bruton (2009, 114th) along with his jettisoning of talented but troubled stars Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Peyton Hills & Tony Sheffler, it appears his head coaching ability can be questioned but his personnel decisions can't.

But the winner will be determined by big, strong, fast men lining up against one and other and handing out ass whoopins, and anyone who tries to indicate otherwise should be banned from talking about, writing about, or viewing American Football.

We&#x27;d imagine the big guy up in the press box in the sky has a pretty full slate on most Saturday nights if the crowd we run with is any indicator, so the Broncos will have to rely on earthly means to pull of the upset.The Patriots won the games they were supposed to this season, but had the softest schedule in the NFL in the last EIGHT SEASONS with only two opponents boasting a .500 or better, losing both. The pressure on Tom Brady because of the lack of his supporting cast is reminiscent of the Peyton Manning led Colts teams that Sully &amp; Fitzy once mocked for being soft and bowing out early in the playoffs. It will require some lucky bounces; a tipped pass, a strip sack, a punt return (maybe all of the above), but anyone who is counting the Tebow-led Broncos out are surely heretics who will be burned at the stake.

The first true test of offense versus defense this postseason will kick off the Divisional round, when the New Orleans Saints travel to San Francisco. The teams met last season, with Drew Brees leading a game-winning field goal drive for a 25-22 victory after Alex Smith had led a game-tying touchdown drive.

The 49ers had several impressive statistics this season, such as their top-ranked rushing defense, and the best average starting field position on both sides of the ball.

But the area San Francisco made a clean sweep of leading the league in revolved around turnovers.

No team had fewer giveaways (10), which tied the NFL record set by the 2010 New England Patriots.
49ers tied the Saints, Bills and Patriots for the fewest lost fumbles (5) in the league.
49ers tied a NFL record for fewest interceptions in a season with 5.
No team had more takeaways (38) than the 49ers, giving them a league-best +28 turnover differential, which is tied for 4^th highest since 1940.
49ers led the league in forced fumbles (31) and fumbles recovered (15; tied with Minnesota).
49ers had 23 interceptions, which tied them with New England for 2^nd most in the league (Green Bay – 31)

Those are dominant numbers on both sides of the ball, which you would imagine bodes well for San Francisco in the playoffs, as they attempt to navigate a path to the Super Bowl that likely runs through the Saints and at Green Bay, with a possible meeting in Indianapolis with New England.

The best method for the 49ers to keep up with those offenses is to shorten the game, maximize each possession, which means Alex Smith must avoid turnovers in his postseason debut. Problem is, the Saints, Packers and Patriots are also among the best in recent history at not turning the ball over.

But what do the cold, hard facts say about teams that protected the ball so well in the regular season? Is it sustainable through the playoffs, is it a fluke, or is the team headed for a ticker-tape pick parade, complete with a case of fumbilitis?

In the regular season, these 15 teams compiled a 176-64 (.733) record. In the playoffs, they are just 7-10 (.412). Excluding the 1990 Giants, who truly are from a different era of football, they are 4-10 (.286), and that doesn’t include the two teams that did not make the playoffs at all.

Since 2008, the lowest turnover teams are 0-5 in the playoffs.

Out of the 11 teams with playoff results, a shocking seven of them went one and done. To make matters worse, six of those seven teams were playing at home. Only the 2009 Packers were playing on the road, at Arizona, and their season ended with a turnover in overtime on just the second defensive touchdown in overtime playoff history.

For teams that played multiple games, the turnovers are listed in chronological order for each game. The last column (RS High TOs) is the most turnovers the team had in a game in that regular season.

For example, the 2010 Chiefs never turned the ball over more than 2 times in a game, and that was something they did four times that season. Against Baltimore, they turned it over 5 times. It was the Baltimore defense that also forced the 2008 Dolphins to go from having one game all season with more than one turnover, to having 5 in the Wild Card loss.

Four of the 11 teams had their worst turnover game of the season in the playoffs, while three others matched their regular season worst. The teams averaged 2.1 turnovers/game in the playoffs, which is more than double their regular season average of 0.9 turnovers/game.
