I think the safety has to be considered.
If you take a safety, you are up by 1 and you have to kick from your 20 yard line. If the chargers had an average return, they would have the ball at their own 33 yard line with about 1.45 and no timeouts down 1.
I actually think it is about 60/40 to take the safety.
Bellichik did it once. I thought about it at the time. You could lose rather than get tied. I think there would have to be less time left to do it. 2 minutes is too much, if you are only putting them back 20 yards.

I was thinking the same thing. You knew that sproles would take inside the 40 anyways so i think i would have taken the safety and take my chance with the chargers having no timeouts. I heard the kaeding was banged up and he was something like 1/4 from 40+ at the end of the year.

Bellichik did it once. I thought about it at the time. You could lose rather than get tied. I think there would have to be less time left to do it. 2 minutes is too much, if you are only putting them back 20 yards.
But you really arent only putting them back 20 yards.
Because from a free kick situation the punter is standing at the 20 yard line, instead of the back of the end zone - so it is 30 yards right away. Now add on that it is a free kick rather than a punt and you should be able to cover better too.....

they didn't want to lose by a field goal. I thought it was the right call. by going empty back field on 3rd and 2 gave SD the green light to pin their ears back. Horrible play call.

Hard to tell ... Hunter did a pretty good job on his punt but the special team were not there on the coverage and allowed a 25+ yards return on the punt. If they could have get some good coverage and limit this to let say 10 yard return, as I presume it should have been from any decent special teams ... I think the punt was the better options.
Although a safety with the punter running around to kill some clock could have been a way out ... but what if Indy would have won that coin flip in OT ... they might had go all the way as well...
Pretty hard to tell to be honest ... I think the refs had a little bit to do in this one... One thing sure, I would not be surprised we have to see the Chargers lose again in the AFC Championship just like last time when they beat the Colts.

No way - not when a FG would beat you. Sproles is a good returner, and averaged almost 25yds per return. A free kick from the 20yd line means the punt (based on his punts all night) goes to about the 20/25yd line, and a 25yd return puts them close to midfield. two first downs against that weak soft Cover 2, and Kaedding is kicking a FG to win the game.

Then you give the Chargers a pretty decent chance of winning the game in regulation. You take your chances with your defense stopping them, and if they don't, you hope you win in OT. It did not work out, but taking the safety there is not the right call.

Not a chance, a FG then beats you in regulation. Now I do think a coach tells his punter that if one thing goes wrong with the snap or anything like that, then get the hell out of bounds. It would be real tough for me to take the safety in that spot though, I think Dungy did the right thing.

Are you kidding? No way you take a safety. Then a FG BEATS you. You are lucky if they don't get the ball on their own 45, then they only nedd 20 yards for a try to win the game. You would only do that if there were 15 seconds left in the game.

The safety made Denver's lead 26-23, but it gave New England punting room and Ken Walter's free kick put the Broncos back to their own 15. The Broncos went three and out and New England had to drive just 58 yards after getting the ball back with 2:15 left after using two timeouts.

they were moving the ball very well as you saw. sd had some tough breaks losing the ball at the indianapolis 1, converting on a 4th down, next play making a very agressive play call, that was intercepted for a touchback. ot shouldve never happened! punting was the right decision.
