But they didn't give a 2nd round draft pick. They are giving two second round draft picks; one this year and one next year, that is conditional on snap counts Alex Smith takes during the season. At worst, the 2014 draft pick is a third rounder.

KC does have some talented players and playmakers on both sides of the ball.
The TV analysts say KC could make the playoffs. I think that's a little optimistic, but I definitely think they could win 6-7 games with a competent QB though. People point to Cassel's turnovers, but I noticed a lot of those happened when KC was down big.
2nd rounder is kinda high, but I think the original rumor of a third was pretty on par. You've got a groomed, veteran QB in his prime, with an accurate arm.
The pick next year is probably a conditional pick based on how well the Chiefs do. If Smith is their starting QB and takes them to the playoffs or the super bowl or something they could probably get a second round pick, but I'm sure the chiefs would be glad to give up a high pick for that level of success. Wouldn't you?

P.S. If I'm the niners I don't mortgage the draft for Revis or anything.
San Fran has been bad to mediocre for years, overhauling the team with young talent. That is why they are so successful. They have a ton of quality players getting paid rookie salaries.
In a couple of years the bill is gonna be due though. Just like they're paying Willis, Bowman, and now Goldson, the time will come for Iupati, Kaepernick, Aldon Smith, etc.
If I'm San Fran I either trade up for someone they really want, or trade swap some picks for picks in the 2014 draft. I'm pretty sure they don't have the roster space to bring on 15 guys. Keep the mix of young guys and vets and they will be competitive for the next decade.
I'm sure the Chief's second rounder will be a highly sought after pick that they will likely end up flipping it for even more picks. After the first round ends, teams will be calling them all night to get a high pick in the second round.
