Looks like Lou never made him an offer and Marty contacted his agent (Brisson).  Is there a market for a 40 yr old goalie out there and how much would it cost?  After 20 yrs wow, the Devils must be broke.

There is a market for him for sure.  I wouldn't have a problem with a 2 year 14 million piece of paper for him. I mentioned this in the thread I started about the Devils having major money problems.

I think Chicago is the best fit too. He can't carry the load of #1 and can split with Crawford...much like Thomas/Rask.

This is a bit of a sad story.

I'd be really surprised if he could command that kind of money though. I'm thinking closer to $9 million over two years.

Oh yeah he won't get that for sure.  Just something I would pay for his playing ability, locker room shawdow and putting fools in the seats.

I think he will actually end up with what you said.

i think it would be fitting for him to playout his last year or two with the habs,he would be an excellent backup, and worth a min of 4 more pts when the devils come to town.i was surprised when the hawks didnt knock on my boys door before the deadline,i think they could have gotten nabby and a vet 5th or 6th d-man at a min cost!

Him a backup in Montreal.   He would be the starter in Montreal. Or at the very least play more games than Price

No way in hell would Brodeur push Price out of the starters job in Montreal, If Marty wants to start this year I highly suggest taking whatever NJ will give him, no one is going to bang down his door offering him a big contract let alone a contract, damn near all the teams have starters under contract for starters money. He should really call it a career.

In what world is Brodeur better than Price? And I am taking about right now obviously.

Marty has played on better teams the last 5 years and Price still has a better save %.

Hell the season Marty only played 30 games was the BEST season the Devils have had the last 5 years with 106 points.

There is ZERO chance Broduer plays in Montreal. He would be a backup. Price will make 6 mil per year and no point in paying both goalie upwards of 10 million. Brodeur in Montreal makes no sense.

Even the French media isn't bringing it up because they know it would be pointless.

To use as leverage to get the money and term he wanted. The Devils likely have no one in the farm system to replace him and zero to n one trade or free agent options.

I think the Devils are in such flux they have no idea of what they even have now.  I hate to think that Lou was playing games with Marty after all those years.

Now the question is will they resign Parise ?  You would think so, considering that they signed thier backstop again.

And maybe not better, but I would still have Marty as a starter over Price. You quote some regular season stats that were a tick better than Marty.   But what really stands out to me is Price's performance in the playoffs for the '10 and '11 seasons.

And yes I know Marty's '08 and '10 performances were not best.

BTW, they resigned Hedberg also.  So they have both netminders back in the fold. I tell ya, I really thought that Hedberg would tested the marked like I thought Biron would of.

Yeah, the Devils are thin here for sure.  They do have Jeff Frazee that is due at least a few starts in the bigs, but I would of started Hedberg instead of him for sure.

____________

Lou Nanne says no chance and he couldn't share the reason why.  He is as plugged in as it gets.  Bank on him not going back to NJ.

He made a comparison to Gaborik with MN.  If the deal was going to get done, it would have gotten done last year.  He hits free agency and it's over. (that wasn't his inside information....just an observation that makes a lot of sense).

Does Parise want to sign there? Like someone mentioned above who is there after Broduer? So in 2 years they need to sign a goalie and will NJ be able to afford paying a goalie BIG money under their current financial situation? It's also not a flashy team and I think a lot had to go the Devils way for them to get to the finals.

As for Price...I'm assuming you mean his first two playoff seasons (07 and 08) when he was 20 and 21 years old playing the toughest position in the sport. His first series he was good posting a .926 save % and the habs would have choked that series away if it was not for his performance in the 1st period of game 7. Granted he was garbage the game prior to that.

The series vs the Flyers he obviously sucked but he also injured his glove hand from a hartnell slash. And he was left unattended in a city of Montreal partying and not in peak shape.

He also sucked the next year in the playoffs but the Habs were in a tailspin. At the ASG break they were 1st in the East, Price injured his groin/lower body and they completely fell apart.

The only other series he played was last year when the Bruins beat him and he had a 2.11 gaa and .936 save % with no markov, gorges and pacioretty....so don't think you could ask for much more. Nobody gave them a shot.

So he has had 2 shitty series out of 4 and ultimately has only won 1 series so its understandable to criticize him but he isn't even 25 yet and goalies reach their peak at 26.

He has already set numerous records for what he has done compared to goalies his age but like you say its all regular season. Now that he signed his contract, he needs to deliver in the postseason.

And before people complain about his 6.5 million cap hit he really only pockets 4 million after taxes in Montreal. Again, Montreal has to overpay when they sign. He still makes less than what goalies around him make. If he has more seasons like he did 2 years ago its a good deal.

Brodeur has had a hall of fame career, but darn the guy has always been protected by trap like systems and some of the best d-men of that era, Stevens, Neidermayer, ect. He would struggle huge if he signed with  a run and gun team like the Hawks, Habs as well.
