If you can get the right pit bull, it would fit the OP's request perfectly.  Pit Bulls used to be called the "Nanny Dog", because owners would go to work and let the dog watch the kids.  But, if you get the wrong pit bull, obviously that would be a disaster.    The Pit Bull is one of the few American bred dogs, and it would be a great all-around breed if fool didn't breed them to fight.  They are smart, loyal, athletic, etc.

good lookin dog jwk, we have a boxer, with a 5 yr old, 3 yr old, and 3 month old, and couldn't be happier with him.  plan on a second when the baby is a year or two older, was leaning german shepherd, but since an inside dog we didn't want all the hair/shedding.   so for now are leaning another boxer, a ridgeback, rotty, or cane corso.

again though, good lookin dog, and i wouldn't want hank comin after me

I was going to get a cane corso, but picked up a presa canario. Very protective and smart.

I would also suggest a Shar-Pei, a Chow-Chow or a Collie. Yep, I said collie.. in case your kid gets stuck in a well.

This guy definitely has a "protect this house" mentality.  Hank has one of the more menacing barks I've heard when the ups guy came to our door the 1st time.  Funny thing, the second time ups guy came he hardly even batted an eye.  Smart guy
