Closers who can actually close games should be the highest paid in this league.

Such terrible base running in this game. Sean Rodriquez for the Rays and Pujols for the Angels to name a few. And the Angels put up 2 runs right after Albert's base running blunder. A few more runs could have definitely been put on the board. This could be 4-4 going into extras right now (for the over). Baseball is an interesting sport to say the least.

Yesterday it was the friggin Dodgers and now the Angels and Marlins implode.   I'm done betting on teams with shitty closers. 1st five inning from now on.

Too many "blowpens" out there.
At least w/ 1st 5 you don't get "mentally tortured" as bad.

NBA has been just as brutal lately; if you're betting dogs anyway.
Over half my bankroll gone in 2 months.

how about this?

I got fucked on the first two STL games against the cubs. Both were blown in the 8th/9th

Then all 3 marlin games were blown in the 8th adn 9th

then the dodger game last night

and the angels today

lost over $3,500 which is a huge portion of my bankroll

may as well give up :)

I've was on wrong side of three blown saves a few weeks back..Bell, Sox Pen...twice in that 13 inning game, and theen Rocks bullpen in the 8th against the hapless Astros. Today lost on Reds, but laid off the other two, but closers are horrid this year thus far. Several of these guys should NOT be closers, Guerra being on in LA. Both Jansen and Lindblom are better pitchers. Mattingly will take forever to make a move, if he does at all. 80%+ of managing in MLB is handling your pitchers, and most guys in MLB stink at it.
In terms of Bell, he is proof it's a lot easier to close games for the Pads when there is no pressure to win than in Miami with such lofty expectations. He does not look the same and cannot throw strikes.
Sorry to anyone who lost today on these games. Long season and you'll bet some back.

Dave "Soup" Campbell used to bet baseball in the '60s, but stopped since the reliever era started. Back then a pitcher would throw a 150+ pitches. Now, you've got guys getting yanked after 85 or so.

I remember him talking about a duel between  2 top elites (??) and they both pitched into the 15th or 16th inning. Unreal compared to nowadays.

Found a clip: "Though the title "THE GREATEST GAME EVER PITCHED" refers to the 16 inning 1-0 game between Warren Spahn's Milwaukee Braves and Juan Marichal's victorious San Francisco Giants that took place on July 2nd and the wee hours of July 3rd, 1963... in which both pitchers pitched the ENTIRE GAME... the real impact of this book to hard core old-school baseball fans (and younger fans who want to know the way baseball was during its heyday... when it was truly the national pastime... and not a watered down version weakened by designated hitters... setup men... middle relievers... closers... guaranteed salaries... and perhaps what is probably the WEAKEST STATISTIC IN HISTORY... *A QUALITY START*... my Lord... allowing three earned runs in six innings... that's an ERA of 4.50... that would barely keep you on the team during the golden age of baseball... et al.) are the flashbacks to the life stories of Spahn and Marichal which rightfully covers more literary ground than the historical 16 inning game itself. Spahn was not only the winningest left handed pitcher in the history of baseball with 363 wins, which also ranks fifth all time... but it also reminds the world that Warren was a certified hero in World War II."

two words are all that is needed when summing up closers.  MARIANO RIVERA.  and that comes from a mets fan who dislikes the yanks.  but this guy is GOD.  as close to perfect for 16 years as you can possibly be.

Craig Kimbrel from the Braves is probably the best closer I've seen so far this year. He's money in the bank! Got tremendous 'swagger' coming out of the pen. Definitely got the confidence that you would like your closer would have each time he's out there.
