#1 Posted: 4/5/2012 5:35:19 PM Driving on I-95 today I got a $100 ticket for driving in the left lane. Understand I'm not speeding or sweerving in and out of traffic just driving. Get pulled over and Mass Trooper says I'm not allowed to drive in the left land except to pass when other lanes are open. My first response was 'officer there is no signs saying I can't drive in that lane'. I kid you not!!!! I said to this guy when he came back with the ticket- "slow day"? 'or are you just pulling me over because I have a NH plate'? I then said what am I supposed to do when I see a Mass Statie driving up the highway in the left lane (speeding at that)? Should I call into 911?
Needless to say I told him I'll see him in traffic court!!
Anybody ever hear of this foolishness or have it happen to them? What's the best way to present my case?

#3 Posted: 4/5/2012 5:55:29 PM it is a law in many states, but in those states i have always seen signs that make you aware of this.
since this is not a law in your state, your ignorance CAN BE a defense--no one can know all the laws in every state. i would take pictures of the road where your were cited to prove that no signs exist prohibiting this--about a mile or so should be enough. |

BTW I didn't drive much farther than a couple of miles in the left lane and I wasn't holding up traffic behind me either. redbook1 jcjcjc24

#6 Posted: 4/5/2012 6:25:41 PM I've heard of that being a law in some states as well, but to get nicked for it?
I don't even know if it's a law in MN or not. I do make it a habit to drive in the right lane if I'm not passing people. Quite frankly, it's a safety deal for me. The further away I am from on-coming traffic, the better. |

#7 Posted: 4/5/2012 7:34:21 PM Wow didn't think you would actually get a ticket for it, but wished they handed out more tickets for it. Nothing worse then being stuck behind some fool in the passing lane. If anything it should be common courtesy to not drive in the left lane unless passing sort of like letting someone onto the freeway by getting out of the right hand lane when they are merging. Not saying you're at fault or anything, but goodluck fighting it. |

#8 Posted: 4/5/2012 7:50:37 PM Dude these pricks are making a huge business on tickets. Sorry bro you wont win in court and if you make a scene the judge can get you on contempt. But you know what cops hate. When your in court say the most sarcastic garbage but do It in a complimentary fashion you will have people laughing their behind off and it pisses those nazi pricks off especially if you get the judge laughing. |

#9 Posted: 4/5/2012 8:30:12 PM Man that sucks behind...but to be honest, you will probably lose in court and it probably isn't worth your time at all man....its $100 bucks. Just bite the bullet and view it as a lessoned learned.
But I have seen many signs in numerous states that read something along the lines of "left lane for passing only" or something like that.
Go home and drink a cold one and laugh about it with your buddies |

didnt you win the lottery and got some cheese saved up?
thats what you should do, got to court and fight it, thats what most people want to do but cant afford to take a day off work just for principle. YOU CAN
they want u to just pay it and go about your way............ stick it to them and even if you have to pay go down giving them an earful about what you think of it.
Do it for all the people who didnt win the lottery and just are forced to pay the ticket, because we cant miss work!

#12 Posted: 4/5/2012 9:10:54 PM Some common sense rules of thumb which can save lives and may even be law in your State or Province...
Do not drive in the left lane except to pass when other lanes are open.
Move left out of the right lane when other lanes are open and allow vehicles entering the highway to merge safely.
Move left out of the right lane when other lanes are open to give vehicles parked on the shoulder extra clearance.
Always signal before changing lanes on the highway.
Always use headlights in bad weather. If your wipers are on then your headlights should also be on.
Dusk is the most dangerous time to see safely. If the streetlights are on then your headlights should be on.
Drive safely, your family is depending on you!

GL MAN Yeah HoldEM I'm not worrying about paying the ticket though. I'm pissed that this is actually a law. I'm going to get it squashed because I know a Statie that's high up in rank. In fact if you ever watched The Departed - at the beginning the 1st 15 minutes they show a quick scene of two staties breaking into a drug house. He's one of those two staties. If I don't get it squashed I'm going to ask the Judge how come vehicles are allowed to travel in that lane during weekends and rush hour and none of them get pulled over. As pulledclear stated this to me is a new racket in the most corrupt state in the Country. I will also make it a point to say I was targeted because I have NH plates.

Go home and drink a cold one and laugh about it with your buddies The only road around here that has signs like that are on The Maine Turnpike which is mostly a 2 or 3 lane highway, but mostly 2 lanes.
