you trim the fat (ie lazy and not so productive), do more with less, be more efficient

not a tough concept to grasp

no point was companies should be hiring some more people, instead of just soaking up all the profits for themselves.

It really amazes me how some of you on this site are always defending corporations so much, like you own the companies. Most of you fail to grasp how these corporations arent contributing anything to our country and instead just taking for their wealthy selves.  Maybe someday you guys will finally get it.

God forbid if companies actually create some jobs and help the economy, instead of just gobbling up every cent for themselves.  We wouldnt want something like that to happen, then all you corporation suckholes would be bitching.

Companies do not exist to provide jobs. Companies exist to make money. This is like Business 101. Why do you think so many companies take jobs offshore? Is it because they are abdicating their primary responsibility to provide jobs to Americans? No, it's because they are actually meeting their primary responsibility of making as much money as possible. Lower labor costs = less overhead = more profit.

I can't speak for others, but I do own some of the companies. You probably do too. Do you have a 401(k)? Do you invest in mutual funds? Own any stocks? If you do, then you own some of these companies. The better profits they make, the higher their returns are for their investors -- you know, those people who are actually putting money on the line.

Get real.  In the past companies shared the wealth with employees by creating jobs, but in todays greedy world the corporate pigs just want all the money for themselves, so they can buy more houses and cars around the world.

Without people having jobs, then they wont have the money to buy all the products from the companies.  Its a 2 way street.

good luck with that 401k stuff, hope the people on wallstreet dont rob you to bad.

cd - with the uncertainty in the economy, tax rates, benefits, etc would you hire anyone right now?

i know more and more companies who friends work for are going to 1099's, strictly contract labor. no benefits, no mandates from government need to be followed

business concept, maximize profits thru efficiency.  Corps. are hanging on to their cash, as there too many unknowns with the state of the economy.
If you own a company, you want to make as much money as possible.  You hire as you grow.

I do own a company cd

I am not the large wall street firms etc that I assume you are speaking of but the concept remains the same

I agree there is greed and that there should be some corporate social responsibility but that lies with each company to decide as this is capitalism and the role of a company as kapano stated is not to provide jobs.....

at the other end of the spectrum there was no loyalty by employees anymore....they jump ship to the highest bidder

it is indeed a 2 way street

He's absolutely right.  i'll add that the key thing here is "record profits." How viable is an economic system that requires "record profits" to maintain positive growth?  Not very, it would seem to me.  This is why neither party has the answers right now.  We need a paradigm change in thinking to inspire a system less jejune.

Labor is the biggest cost to any company.  Less people employed at a company usually means more profits.

Naw not me my motto is only darn the ones who deserve it and I have worked for a few corporations that cared for their people and realized they were their most valuable asset but it's rare. Why have one skilled worker who is you neighbor and friend when you can have three from somewhere else for the same money that you don't know and don't give two hoots for.

bluefin - were you under duress to accept any of the "bad jobs" you've taken? were you not able to leave and find work elsewhere?

i know its not that easy but there is always choice

employers dont give two shits about an employee. once the cost of that employee outweighs the benefit of their labor, they're gone. its sad but such is the way of the world

well, I treat my guys well and they in return do the same for the company. They of course get other job offers so I have to keep wages competitive plus have a good work enviroment.

A good company and a good employee know that stability is usually the recipe for success

KOAJ No but I had a few great jobs were I was forced out by someone younger after I trained them for the "corporation" and I also went from going to 1 useless meetings a day to 2 or 3 just to please corporate, so some hambone from HR or HQ could justify their  place in the food chain.

Lordspoint  I agree with that statement 100 % but the problem is in giant corporations you become a number and everybody is replaceable sooner or later. If your job is skilled and you produce and maintain the correct corporate image life is smooth but if you excell and your image is off your a target from those who steal your ideas, take your training and then work for less and offer savings to the corporation.

One of the most disappointing realities of a corporation is you can't punch it in the nose when it deserves it.

Most of the automobile industry in Japan has been unionized for years (I think).
