Sarah...you are not setting a very good example for your children by telling all these "white lies"....

Plane Not Sold on eBay

One of the compelling anecdotes about Sarah Palin is that she auctioned off the Alaska governor's jet on eBay after taking office -- a swift move made by a reformer hoping to clean up the excesses of her predecessor.

But in fact, the jet did not sell on eBay. It was sold to a businessman from Valdez named Larry Reynolds, who paid $2.1 million for the jet, shy of the original $2.7 million purchase price, according to contemporaneous news reports, including a story in the New York Times.

Dan Spencer, the director of administrative services for Alaska's Public Safety Department, said that the Republican speaker of the Alaska House, John L. Harris, brokered the deal. Reynolds made campaign contributions to both Palin and Harris in 2006 and 2007.

What happened? It appears that, as promised during her bid for governor in 2006, Palin did try to sell the plane on eBay but that doing so was not as easy as it might have sounded. After putting it up to auction, there was one serious bid, in December 2006, and it fell through. Still, the Westwind II was sold about eight months later, achieving Palin's goal of ridding the state of a luxury item.

But that hasn't stopped Palin, or John McCain, from implying -- and, on Friday, claiming outright -- that Palin did sell the jet on the Internet.

"You know what I enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay -- and made a profit!" McCain declared in Wisconsin at a campaign stop on Friday. It could not be immediately determined what that profit was.

The video tribute to Palin that aired at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night made the same claim. "She signed sweeping ethics reform legislation, auctioned the governor's jet on eBay," the narrator said, citing it in a list of Palin's achievements.

Palin has been more cautious in her comments. Rather than claiming she sold it on eBay, she gave in her convention remarks a description that was true but, nonetheless, still left the impression she had sold the jet online. "That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay," Palin said.

"She put the plane on eBay," said Tucker Bounds, a spokesman for McCain's campaign. "It didn't meet the minimum threshold the state desired so they used a broker. The plane was purchased by the former gov against the wishes of the legislature and voters -- was a symbol of corruption."

She sold the plane and saved the taxpayers money on maintenance and costs."

She said that she put the plane on eBay, not that she sold it on eBay.  Yes, she did put it on eBay. Alot of us watched the bids!  It did not get enough bids to pay what was owed and a broker sold it later.

That plane PISSED off alot of people.  Murkowski had and always has had an attitude that he was king.  While he was cutting things, he went out and bought himself a plane.  People were furious to say the least.

Bottom line:   another misrepresentation by the press -- what she said was true.

This is silly. Who cares where the plane was sold? The point is she sold it

Ever think  maybe she thought it was sold on e-bay until someone corrected her? McCain too?

I guess she should've micro- managed the sell of this plane right down to creating her user ID on e-bay and drafting the sales contract. Or maybe, like an Executive does, she called her lackey Dan Spencer into her office and said "sell this damn plane on e-bay, I don't need it", and marked that off her list of things to do that day.

This reminds me on a recent incident at my office. I come in one morning and everyone is bitching because we're out of coffee. I told them to "relax that I would send the office manager to Sams Club to get some". She leaves and comes back with some coffee, so I go around telling everyone that she's back from Sams Club with the coffee. Well, later on that day, I see a  receipt for the coffee on her desk, and it's from COSTCO!!!!

I'm such a liar.....

Besides, I'm not seeing where she ever said she sold the plane on ebay. Did she?

bobcat:

Everyone who watched that speech came away with the impression that 'Super Hockey Mom' sold a plane on eBay......ask anyone who didn't read the follow-up.

Why didn't she just say......"I sold a unnecessary luxury jet"....that would have been truthful and garnered her the praise.

Instead...it is 'Super Hockey Mom' doing things that 'Average Hockey Mom' could do...sell things on eBay.   That way she connects and becomes "one of them".

Bullshit.

I'm digging through my old bet slips....can't seem to find one that states my guy had to give 'electoral votes' four years ago.

Do you recall that?

I am sensing a little lack of confidence here, bobcat.

4 yrs ago was a 50/50 election....a fair bet either way. This one has WAY to many factors working against one party.

I have NO confidence in the GOP winning.....hell I'm not even sure I will vote for them.

It was another misrepresentation, another friggin lie, by the McCain campaign.  Enough of your spin Chick.  She lied to the entire viewing audience of the GOP convention.  It wasn't an oversight, a half-truth, it was a friggin lie.

Not selling on eBay

Sarah Palin, in her speech, told a carefully stated — but accurate — story of putting a state-owned jet up for sale on eBay.

Palin did not, as the ADN reported at the time, succeed in selling it on eBay; she tried and failed.

She didn't actually claim to have though:

While I was at it, I got rid of a few things in the governor's office that I didn't believe our citizens should have to pay for.

That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay.

And she did put it on eBay, which seems like a good piece of symbolism and a clever stunt, even if she wound up selling it through more traditional channels.

But McCain, retelling the story, misstated it today:

"You know what i enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay — made a profit," he said, introducing Palin.

Well, no. And the state sold it at a loss of half a million dollars.

Why does the GOP have to tell lies to try and win the Presidency?
