Tipping really depends on whether or not you frequent the same book and become a regular at that book. Most writers enjoy their "regulars", and discuss their bets, opinions, etc with them. It does become a relationship of sorts and, much like going to the same diner or bar and having the same waitress or bartender take care of you...even though you always eat the same dish or drink the same beer....the "tip" becomes part of the relationship that you have with the person servicing you. You know that they didn't cook the food or brewed the beer; but they are part of your "relaxation experience:" and, consequently, you tip them.
Same as with ticket writer....
Sorry for the "food and drink analogy"...but you see my screen name
If you bet the horses and are staying a few hours to play a bunch of tracks...tippping the change or a buck or two when you win is always a nice gesture. You are developing a relationship with the writers that will be there for you. If you hit a "signer' ( an exotic bet that requires ID, then use your judgement based upon how well the writers have been treating and communicating with you.
Sports betting wins....a little different....depends on the level of wager. Usually still the odd change; but since it might be your only wager of the day, that is up to your judgement; ie: How happy are you?....

they dont get paid badly they starts at $14 an hour, that isnt a ton but it isnt garbage
i bet 30 a game if i am betting the dialy sports during the rgular year, am i supposed to tip a buck a day? that adds up
sounds cheap but i only run in put in my bets and run out

$14 an hour is the high-end (Aria, for one). Major books on the Strip pay as little as $10 & change per hour. This is the lowest paid job in the entire hotel/casino...and non-union. They handle thousands of dollars each shift, have to be 100% accurate with their drawer and with the tickets they write, deal with constant questions from tourists who have never bet before and have no idea what -165 or +220 means....AND ARE THE LOWEST PAID AND LOWEST TIPPED EMPLOYEES IN THE WHOLE INDUSTRY.
Frankly, Leroy's kiosk machines get more respect than the ticket writer gets from most bettors.
Sure, lots of writers are just doing a job and could care less about you, the bettor....But, that tends to happen after many years of dealing with You, the bettor.
Just explaining the other side of the coin

But...please all remember...You want your ticket written properly, no errors that you find later after your team won, and you want to be paid accurately for your wager, and you want all your questions answered because many books are different in what and how they book the games.....and many....MANY....of these ticket writers do this job because they are just like YOU....Away from their home book, they bet just like YOU.....they are attracted to this job (poor pay and all) because they love sports betting and want to be part of it...."Human Nature".... |

Just place your bet and get the hell outa there. Come back for winnings. Im going to vegas next week, i tip the people who should get a tip.

It depends on how often I win and how much, if I'm hitting regularly I'll tip to keep the good karma/chi flowing, if I hit big I'll tip for the same reason. You're not expected to tip, they're not making minimum wage such as servers, bartenders, or cocktails that depend on tips to make a living. |

#21 Posted: 7/3/2010 11:08:04 PM Writers are non-union and can earn between $9+ to $14 (Aria for one). Their base salary is less than the people that clean the ashtrays. They split the tokes among themselves as well as the admins in the back that do the paperwork and don't write tickets. The extra money every couple of weeks helps a lot of them..it ususally amounts, on the Strip, to (in a good book) a couple of hundred. The pressure to do their job accurately and follow the laws of the Nevada Gaming Commission is not an easy job. They are subjected to many gamblers/runners who are out there to circumvent the law. Their job is no easier than those of the dealers who have to constantly watch for cheats under the eyes of the pit bosses and cameras...they just make far less $$$ than the dealers because the sportsbook is, in most casinos, only 1-2% of the profit line and, therefore, management pays the writers less than the dealers (who also get much more in tip money).
Don't get me wrong....I am not advocating that anyone tip every writer for every bet.....just appreciate the service you are getting and, if you are a regular in a race & sportsbook and the writers take care of you,...and you are winning.... then you should look to take care of them. And, if you are a guest of the hotel and make multiple bets during your stay, rely on the writer for information on the games, drink tickets, racing forms, and friendly accurate service....and you are winning....then you should strongly consider leaving some spare change....it doesn't amount to much for you; but it does add up for the writers. |

#22 Posted: 7/4/2010 5:56:24 PM I guess I am a george here lol, When I start off my saturday, I always put in a 1 unit 3 team Parlay a 1 unit 4 team parlay and a 1 unit 5 team parlay, and nearly 6 or 7 straight bets at around 4 to 7 units each, then ofcourse another 3 to 6 second half wagers and another 2 or 3 One unit 2 team or 3 team parlay.
If the ticket writer is cool or freindly and ofcourse patient I will give them a choice
10 dollar toke or do you want me to bet you a 3,4, or 5 teamer same as mine for 10 bucks?
I have yet to find one sportsbook writer take the ten dollars, always go with the 3 or 4 team parlay option, and on Sunday mornings when they see me for NFL, they close the window wait for others to go to other windows and call me over :)
