That play where Brees took one on the chin and threw a pick six but it was flagged for roughing the passer just got me wondering.  I get the whole protecting the QB thing, but c'mon, he wasn't pummeled in the face or hit egregiously late.  He got hit right between his collar and his chin pad.  He's wearing that chin pad for a reason!

Are all the finicky rules about "protecting the players" making football impossible to bet on.  i mean regardless of the outcome of this current game (i'm on sd), there are just so many variables outside of the two teams that are playing, it makes me think there is no point.

One can't lead with your helmet right into the face of a QB.
PERIOD.

I get your point, but these are the new rules, unfortunately. But they do call that everytime. Joe Mays (DEN MLB) got a good one game plus fines for his similar hit to Matt Schaub a few weeks ago.

Ive talked to several older bettors that use to love betting the NFL in the 80's & 90's...............they all say the same thing, defenses cant play defense the way they were taught growing up & everything is about the offense. The refs cal too many ticky tack calls which can change the game in an instance...............

I remember watching Dallas playing Tampa back when I was in elementary school & Ed Too Tall jones body slamming the Tampa Qb on his head & no penalties were ever called.............I mean, that is definitely roughing but the play you described with the pick 6 imo is about keeping the tv game close to keep the viewers watching...............

PERIOD.

Hit him in the chest, not the face. Regardless still can't lead with the crown...

yea i mean i was just frustrated and was using that play as a quick example.  i get that it wasn't the most controversial call.  but in general, the NFL has implemented a ton new rules for player safety that makes the game much more subjective to call from the refs point of view as opposed to an objective game b/w two teams.

The roughing the passer/PI calls favor the offense, which is what the NFL wants. Ironic in that play because it nullified a pick 6.

Wouldn't it make a whole lot more sense since the NFL is so concern about player safety and lawsuits, that they should just dress all the players like the Michelin man instead?

Player safety and all, I get. But those ticky tacky PIs calls way too often change the momentum of the game.

PTB good post.

You look at the play on Brees, that is a bam bam play on a QB, it hardly looked lke the defensive player had time to change how he was going to hit Brees.  That is what pisses me off, they play letter of the law bullshit on these defenders that do not have time to let off the gas.  That is what bugs me about NFL ref, they can hide behind letter of the law every time, get praised by Collingsworth, then hold the flag on another game changing non call, Gates.  And ini the end they get an exciting finish with lots of drama, get Brees his W, the Fans, Loomis and Payton all lookiing on for the cameras.  I just wish I saw this garbage clearer before the game, such a orchestrated game is the NFL and the refs are the directors.

This rule is protecting someone's life in the future. Some of these linebckers and safeties could absolutely kill a QB who's concentrating on making a throw, not protecting his body for a blow.
