#32 Posted: 1/26/2012 12:53:33 AM As much as I hate FG`s, I don't see they problem with them.
Your average field position (in college) is about the 30 yard line. Move the ball 45 yards and you are almost guaranteed 3 points (for most teams). Move the ball another 25 yards and you add 4 points (to what was "almost guaranteed"). Miss and they other team gets the ball.
So when it's 4th down and 2 from the 30 yard line, after your team moved about 40 yards already, you can take the 3 points, which you will only get about 50% of the time in college, or you can go for it and GUARANTEE yourself 3 points with a shot at 4 more.
In the NFL, they would punt on 4th and 1 from ANYWHERE on the field. You see 18 yard shits when going for it can get you 7 points and missing would awkwardly pin the other team inside their 5.
Imagine if you eliminated FG's, now you automatically have 4 downs and can get 0 points after marching down the to the 10 yard line.
I wonder how that would affect betting lines ? No FG. TD = 7 points automatic, unless you wanna "go for it" and make it 8. No XP's. Punts and kickoffs still in the game as a return for a score can still be made possible.Only 7 point scores (the majority of the time). Then there would be no need to ever "go for the 8". Will all lines be set at multiples of 7 ? |
