Ducks Captain Ryan Getzlaf Apparently Challenged A Nightclub Full Of Finns To A Fight

Larry Brooks argued. The stereotypical Russian hockey player is a vodka-swilling, chain-smoking, floppy-haired pretty boy, and so they get away with less than their North American counterparts.

We bring all this up by way of regaling you with what allegedly happened with the Canadian national team over the weekend in Helsinki:

MTV3, the official broadcaster of the world hockey championship, reported on its website that Getzlaf, winger Corey Perry and a few other Team Canada players were involved in an incident with drunken Finnish fans following their Saturday night overtime loss to the United States.

Getzlaf was alleged to have waved his fist at the Finns and said that "you do not want this" of his fist.

Another report said proclaimed himself as "the captain of the Anaheim Ducks" and that he "threatened to knock everyone out in three minutes."

This, just like Radulov and Kostitsyn boozing 'till the wee hours in Scottsdale, Arizona, is hilarious. But of course the old-school culture uses one incident to indict a nation of hockey players and the other as snickering fodder. Sure, the IIHF World Championships aren't the Stanley Cup playoffs, but, then again, the Nashville Predators aren't exactly Team Canada. We say: carouse on, hockey players of the world. Do your thing

He played a great game today along with the rest of them so there is no comparison. He was not hungover and unable to play like those two were, he was fresh and ready to go. Radulov and Kostitsyn could barely skate and just stood and watched from center ice on there shifts as there team got scored upon a few times. When Weber questioned Radulov about his lazy play during the game at the bench, the two of the got into an argument because Radulov is too great to be questioned in his opinion. And yes an early tourney game against France is not comparable to a very pivotal must win game during the stanley cup finals imo.

getz should have said "Ich bin der Kapitan auf der Amerikanischen Kampf Enten" (I am the Captain of the American Fighting Ducks)

I'm pretty sure most Finns can "Deutsch sprecht" (speak German)

there will always be excuses for canadians.

ducks fans have complained about his effort level non stop this year. where was the heart and commitment there?

there are plenty of soft, lazy canadian players but you won't hear much about that.

That's bullshit. Jeff Carter is one proiminent name that is labeled as soft and lazy. Mike Richards is labeled as a drunk with a bad attitude, and there are many more that have that label but it's not politically incorrect to hack on them so it does not stir anything up and is therefore not as newsworthy.

The reason you will hear it a bit more sometimes pertaining to Russian players is because, first of all in general they have displayed that more in the league in their history. Secondly the Russian players often have an incredible raw skill set that many North Americans don't have, so the light is cast brighter upon them, because it is deemed they are wasting incredible god given talents, which in a way is a compliment to their hockey abilities.

When Claude Giroux or Sidney Crosby etc. are slumping offensively do you see them working harder in other areas enabling them to still be great in other ways? Yes you do and that raises the spirits of their entire team. You don't get that as much from many of the skilled Russian players and that sours people as that makes an entire team and dressing room weaker. You just said people have been calling Getzlaf lazy all year so there is another Canadian right there getting called lazy.

This is all generalizing ofcourse anyway. Konstantinov was one of my fave players when he played, and it was mostly for his hard work and gritty style. Datsyuk is one of my fave modern day players and I would love to have him on my team. As much as I have never been a fan of Ovechkin he is impressing the hell right out of me these playoffs with his dedication and team first attitude. I have been thoroughly impressed with him as an individual these playoffs.

Everyone is an individual but stereotypes are there for a reason.
