Did I just hear correctly, the Yanks will be on the road at the wildcard winner to open the playoffs???

That doesnt make sense at all

Does that mean Washington starts on the road too???

It is a disadvantage to have the best record??

Yep the dog starts off with 2 at home, then 3 at home for the favorite.

Gotta love it.

i always thought it would be better to have the home games later in the series no?

U just gotta win 1 of the first 2 and you got a big advantage heading home and being the better team..

Maybe....but the #1 seed, best record in the league, with the possibility of coming home down 0-2 needing to win 3 in a row

Well the way I look at it is, if the dog can win their 2 at home, then its really hard to beat a team 3 straight games.  So if they are up 2-0, they have a HUGE advantage.

This has been known for months now...but even still, its all relative.  If everyone takes care of business on their home turf then it still plays out exactly the same.  Sucks to have the option of going down 0-2 but if you can't steal 1 on the road against a less talented team, or can't sweep your home field after losing 2 on the road you aren't a world series caliber team to begin with.  Nobody's gonna make a vocal cry about this if they lose b/c its too easy to counter.

The only way it actually matters is if a series goes 3.  And in the playoffs if you lose 3 straight to open you don't have a leg to stand on to begin with

Why's it any harder for the favorite to win 3 at home when they just lost 2 on the road.  All that happens is you win your 2 at home right back and then force a game 5, which is how the series would have played out in the other format.

Exactly....

I mean, if the #1 seed comes back home down 0-2...with their #3 and #4 starter, or #3 and #1 on short rest...they have all the pressure to win 3 in a row...

Huge disadvantage in my opinion....

Playoffs are going to be great......Great Season White Sox-last month collapse

AND...still puts the pressure on the home team out of the gate.  If you only split you're now on the road knowing you have to win 2 of 3 in somewhere like Yankee stadium.  Not a small task

T-Rav.....

For your last statement.....

Go back during the season and look at how many times the Yanks, Rangers, As, Tigers, Os...SF, St, Reds, Wash Atl  got swept in a 3 game series...

Im guessing it was slim to none....

Thats why coming back home down 0-2...as the higher seed, is such a huge disadvantage....

The wildcard teams are on cloud-9 just making the playoffs...now they get the first 2 games at home

In my opinion, unlike football or basketball, I truly think any teams that makes the playoffs can with the World Series.  Unlike a 8 beating a 1 in basketball, or wildcard beating 1 seed in football, I dont think there is a true upset in baseball playoffs.

Thats why I think the #1 seed playing on the road is such a disadvantge....

I mean...if Texas wins the wild card game, and the Yanks lose to Tex...is that really an upset???  I dont think so

I'm not arguing its not a disadvantage, you have to win 3 straight.  Thats obvious.  I'm just saying if its that hard for these teams to be swept in the last 3, its only slightly less impossible for them to lose 2 in a row.  Besides, the yankees won't need to lose 3 straight they're the team on the road.  My point, in a vaccum this isn't that big a deal.  Don't go down 0-2...

If it isn't that big of a deal, why don't they just give the better seed the first 3 at home?  Wouldn't that be a huge advantage?

The better seeded team should always start the series at home.  No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

B/c then you're giving a team a chance to be swept without even geting to their own building.  If you have to ask that there's no debate.  I'm not saying it doesn't matter, not saying 2-0 isn't a near death sentence.  I'm just saying a team with championship moxy shouldn't have this be the only reason they fail.  Say the series plays out exactly as it should.  2 wins road, 2 wins home.  I believe we're arguing somewhat different points.  Its a 1 year scheduling conflict.  Not permanent.

I don't like the fact that the "worse" team gets to have their "ace" start the series at home and looking to put the "better" team in an early hole.

Well, if you want to talk about who is better or worse....the Tigers should be in the Wildcard game....

#1 Yankees - 95 wins
#2 A's - 94 wins
#3 Baltimore and Texas - 93 wins
#5 Detroit - 88 wins and played in the weakest division.

Winner of Detroit/Baltimore @ NY
Texas @ Oakland

And it should be 2-2-1

Just my opinion...

That's why I put quotes around them. The terms higher seed and lower seed gets lost in translation at times.

The biggest disadvantage here is that New York and Washington will have no idea where the hell they are playing a baseball game at until after Friday's games!  Yanks could be in either Baltimore or Texas.  That's a huge difference in both team's and geography.  Same with Washington with either Atlanta or St. Louis.

That is just pathetic.  They need to host game 1, game 2, send game 3 and game 4 to the wild card and game 5 back in New York/Washington if necessary.

Bud Selig

Just win one of the first 2 road games.. I dont get the big disadvantage outside having to travel instead of staying and knowing they home.. U win game 1 or game 2 or even both .. You have your foot on their necks goin home for 3..

baseball playoff format is a total and complete shitshow.......starting with the extra wildcard...and a one and done series (after a 162 game, almost 7 month season..it comes down to one game...get the darn out of here)....

then this new format...where the higher seeds play on the road...absolutely ludicrous....not a sport on the planet where this exists...and it didnt here until some moron (Selig) fucked with the system.....

this all will change within a year or two....wildcard matchup has to be 2/3.....and the div series format has to be 2-2-1
