I remember we had a thread, either in here or in the College Football forum, where we were talking about Upshaw being a top 10 or 15 pick.

This kid is in serious danger of falling to the second round.

As Lion fan I wouldn't mind them jumping up and taking him ASAP. Dude has some serious potential.

Is there any red flags or off field problems that anyone has heard about?

I believe its most likely his size and that NFL teams view him as a tweener and thus not an every down player.

However, when AJ Jenkins goes in the 1st round, I seriously don't understand what NFL teams are looking for

Gotcha. I wish I could find that thread where we were discussing Upshaw after last years title game. I think everyone in that thread agreed he was top 15 at worst. Obviously things change with the off season and combine.

However I had never heard anything bad about him both on field and off. I get that were not scouts or GM's and just speculating but I'm surprised he is still on the board. Wondering if anyone will jump for him.

All in all a very active and exciting first round. I like what the new rookie salary scale has done for the draft. Teams don't have to risk as much $$$ to go after the guys they want.

Nice job NFL for making an already exciting event even more exciting. Goodell maybe an behind hole but he is definitely doing right by the NFL.

Yeah I wouldn't even care if the Lions traded up to get him next pick. I didn't think he would be on the board still. I know they need a CB bad but sometimes these opportunities need to be taken advantage of.

I do know they are looking at Janoris Jenkins and his nine kids by 8 different women(I know I'm exaggerating) so I doubt they will jump.

I don't see Mayhew doing anything crazy with that CB need but I have to say if they could move up and get him and maybe roll the dice on CB later on it could pay off.

I trust Mayhew though.

Upshaw's situation alone has me ready for the next round of the draft though.

Do you think the Rams are sitting pretty for a chance to trade back and pick up 2 or 3 more picks? The players they need will still be there with their next 2 picks.....#33 could hold so more value than I thought

my main reason for not trusting mayhew is the selections and subsuquent trading up for jahvid best leshoure and titus young

best had concussion issues well documented
leshoure was a known pot head
and young was a luxury pick

all while ignoring o line, linebacker, and corner picks.

you cant him them all, but i think mayhew has gotten way too much credit here for his picks.  suh fell in their laps.  i may be wrong, but stafford and calvin i know were already on the team when he took over.  spivey is horrible and he spent early on that too.

The Rams definitely have some leverage for anyone in need of or want of Upshaw. It should be an active night for their War Room.

Can't argue with your analysis on Best, Leshoure, or Young.

I still trust him though, especially after finally taking the RIGHT O Lineman in the first round(although I realize Cherilous wasn't his pick).

Best definitely suffered from concussions at Cal. No doubt about it. Still though, when he plays he is very effective so I could see the reason for drafting him.

train some guys slip through thr craks. Upshaw is this year's guys. 1st rd talent for a 2nd rd price. I think Lions need 2 cb's myself

ktrain trying not to be overly critical as lions have improved tenfold

sure wish they had been able to get a michael bush or asante samuel before this draft though, bush especially came cheap for his qualities.

the lions main struggles are obvious

1. cannot stop the pass because their pass d is horrific (yet to be addressed)
2. when they need the tough yards to get the first down on 3rd and short they dont have a back that can do that (bush can)

still a draft to go and am happy they took an o lineman instead of a guy like mercilus or upshaw in the first.

the two teams i look at with interest..dallas/ detroit..detroit hasnt gotten better yet, dallas has

Definitely agree with that.

Although last year Mayhew went with Fairly because he slipped when the Lions really didn't need DL help in the first round.

Either way I agree that CB is a definite need, it's just so tempting knowing that Upshaw is a realistic possibility.

Like I said, it just makes me want to tune in for the next round to see where he falls.

I think Reiff was a good pick and, while he won't provide immediate help, he can be a long term answer at LT. Stafford isn't a 10 year vet and the Lions still have a year or two to grow.

They took Leshoure to be that guy to get them that one yard. Can't help injuries. However that weed thing isn't helping his cause. It's reminding me of Charles Rogers. My personal beliefs are that weed charges are irrelevant as far as personal use go. Unfortunately the NFL doesn't agree with my beliefs and he needs to adhere to the league standards for it.

You bring up some great points though.
