#104 Posted: 2/25/2012 1:46:17 AM if oakland is all about saving money why didn't they give so much for an unproven cuban player, that's risky, i doubt he will sell that many tickets, it's billy beane ball who will never get u to a world series |

Try doing that thing where you read the whole thread. It's explained in there. |

Thanks for making my argument for me Lew. You actually kinda, sorta, see the light. You're just in denial about it. |

My favorite excerpt:
"Sabermetrics, as James' musings became known, was at first a cryptic tongue spoken exclusively by stat-happy fans who analyzed the game but never played it. Then, in 2003, Michael Lewis wrote Moneyball, a behind-the-scenes look at how trailblazing GM Billy Beane and the small-market Oakland A's used sabermetrics to assemble one of baseball's best teams. In the decade since, the game's decision makers, many of whom sprouted from the Beane management stalk, have taken a shine to the New Testament. Today, the majority of MLB front offices -- from the A's to the Yankees -- rely on sabermetric analysis to evaluate talent." |

Andrew Friedman > Billy Beane...without question.
I'm just about done reading "The Extra 2%" by Jonah Keri. It's about the Rays take over with new ownership and their new methods of addressing how to run their front office.
Awesome book with some great insight as to the back ground of the Rays. It also mentions "Moneyball" and Billy Beane no fewer than 10 times through out it.
There is definitely a correlation between how the two franchises run their teams. Basically Friedman and the Rays were able to exploit the markets neglecting defense after Beane did it with OPS. |
