If you're a man, and you have a FB account, then the ONLY way I can respect you is if you're using it as a way to track down ex girlfriends, ex highschool chicks, ex college chicks, and friends of your current girlfriend or wife to see if there is an easy bang to be had.
I really hope retarded issues like this will just go away at some point. We live in a different world. A different world from even 15 years ago. Within minutes I can be having a conversation with a bored chick and get her to send me naked pics of her. It's just the world we live in now. I don't know who these prospective employers think they are. We're all human, we all want to do drugs and have sex. Who the fuck are they to judge? I'm sure half the people in charge of "monitoring" your FB account are up to some sleazy shit themselves.

No way hutch. They want personal info bottom line. Why the big difference money (which is personal) and how you go about your wkds (which is also personal). Both are huge invasions of privacy. If you feel fine giving them info about how you conduct finances, don't see why you should be up in arms about how you conduct your personal life as well.
So having a beer while on vacation and putting it on your facebook page might cost you a job? Even if it's the only beer you had in your life? Not buying it. Drug screens and background checks cover this.

That's what i don't understand here. gofish3 certainly gets it. People create a facebook account, for the sole purpose of giving away their personal information, and they do it early, often, and for free!
____________
If you make your facebook page public, then I'd say give them your password and don't bitch. But you CAN make it private and only able to be viewed by people approve.

I don't have FB but what could I have on my page that would HELP me land a job or make an impression? Why would I show something that would only make it tougher to score job?

The same guy who says pat downs in the airport are a violation of your personal rights says you should have to hand over the password to your own personal page on a website.
KOJA, I seldom agree with you, but often respect your opinions. I now am wondering if you have lost your mind.
i never said to give up your FB or twitter account passwords. i wouldn't
just dont post stupid shit and dont pics of you with a 4 foot hooka or throwing beads at mardi gras. i dont care if you do it on weekends or your own time, just dont advertise it to the world. its easy enough to get the info if its out there. my only point has been to not put it out there

What I think I mean is that we're moving towards a society where nothing is private. People were ALWAYS perverts. People ALWAYS did stupid drunk things. Now, like it or not, the everyday person can capture that and slap it on the internet in minutes.
Twenty years ago, if you made a drunken fool of yourself at a party, really only the people there would know about it. Now, the next day its on 60 different people's FB page. It's the age we live in now. I understand not advertising your escapades...but what are you going to do, never venture outside?
My feeling is, you have to assume in this age, that everyone knows everything about you. So, if we all know that we're all drunken, perverted fools...then what's the big deal? Are you really that surprised anymore when a celeb's dick pic shows up? Who cares. EVERYBODY is out there doing this shit right now.
To be ruled out as a candidate for a job because you're a normal, partying, porn loving red blooded American who likes to drink himself to near-death limits is insulting. Especially when the CEOs are all doing coke and fucking strippers.

I find it funny because guys please tell what the fuck is the difference between them busting your chops on privacy for facebook compared to a credit check? Both very personal. Haven't heard anyone bitch about credit checks. If one is okay then the other one should be fine.
Plenty of people have/had a problem with the credit check thing, it was even talked about on here in the past. I don't think the credit check is necessary for pretty much most jobs out there and is just a way for companies to be overly nosy in their employees personal business.

It's impossible to say what's right and what's wrong when the position a person is seeking isn't known.
If a person is trying to get a job as the middle east's director of operations for Blackwater ... the facebook thing is only a drop in the bucket of what they'll be looking into. That's an extreme example ... but you get my point.

I don't use facebook, so maybe i misunderstand this, but as far as i know, once you offer up the information to facebook.com, you no longer own it. It is property of facebook.com, regardless of whether or not your account is "private" or public
like koaj said, if you are an adult and want a facebook for networking with business, get a linkedin. friggin gold mine

How would having a beer with friends jeopardize your job? Here at our firm, they just check to see how often during the day you are on if at any and I will give you a another crazy reason as well.....They actually check to see if you are friends with the VIP's at top competitors agencies. We have had a couple people apply, get hired, work for a couple months on big projects and steal info/practices and feed them to their friends at other firms. Kinda fucked but has happened twice and thats twice too many for them. Now if you are a friend they just ask the relationship and bring up people in the past. They often tred lightly too with big accounts/info that could be stolen by a corporation unitl you seem genuine. Weird but true. Can't argue as some of our clients our Bell, Coke, Toronto Blue Jays, MLSE, Canadian Tire, Home Depot CDN, Hyundai, Honda, Samsung CDN and Dell. Those corp's alone pay this firm upwards of 20-50 million.
