#26 Posted: 2/29/2012 5:10:56 PM Rodgers played on a pretty poor team and carried them. Cal was not the quality that Stanford was, especially on the defensive side if I recall.
For every one Rodgers you can hit up many other big names that flamed from the Pac whatever.

#27 Posted: 2/29/2012 5:14:49 PM I have no doubt RG3 will be a good NFL QB. He has a good head on his shoulders & an even better work ethic.
having said that, I hope the Colts take Andrew Luck #1 |

#28 Posted: 2/29/2012 5:24:36 PM Wall,
You mean from outside of John Elway and Ken Stabler to name a few? And a very good qb in Carson Palmer (before the injury)?
By your logic, it would be suffice to say that qbs from the SEC should dominate in the pros. Not too many have either.
In short, when you look at the history of all solid to HOF qbs in the NFL, they all come from every region and conference in the nation. I submit, Dave Krieg from little known Milton College and Big Ben who played in the MAC. While big name schools like Florida and LSU have turned in few solid pro qbs.
And Cal's defense under Rodgers was way much better than Stanford's. Helping to explain why there are no standouts in the draft from Stanford. On Cal's defense, their were standouts that played in the NFL like DE Brandon Mebane, Sydquan Thompson, Zack Follett. Talent level was no where equal 6 years ago.
Rodgers playing on a pretty poor team and carried them? How about Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett, and Desean Jackson on that squad?

Luck IS tough and smart enough to lead a bad team. Just how that is to transpire on the NFL level is anyone's guess, but just look at Stanford outside of Andrew Luck, where is the talent? Two highly touted offensive linemen and a TE that Luck made look good and that's about it. He turned a mediocre Stanford team into a real contender.
same can be said bout RGIII and baylor |

Only one on that list that is current..and MANY who were alleged bombs that turned into busts.
kickinA, I think the overall team Cal had was inferior to what Stanford had, and wasnt JJ Arrington the back for Cal?
I agree with what you said about where good QB's come from, and I am not a believer on the SEC either because of the style of play there..meaning more balance vs more passing in other conferences.

you can say that about a lot of athletes that never turned into anything as a pro.
rg3 is a tremendous athlete. his arm for nfl accuracy is sh*t. just as said above, big 12 had no defense at all. none. next to this season, rg3's best yr was his first. very inconsistent arm during his time at baylor.
if he prays during each huddle, maybe he'll take a sh*t team and take it to .500 and a playoff victory...

#37 Posted: 2/29/2012 11:07:58 PM Sorry, left Rodgers off the list since he didn't start right away (some Favre guy was there), but you'd have to admit he has done VERY well in the few years he has started. I only listed Locker because he got to start in his rookie year.
In regards to Luck and Stanford, he had more than "a" tight end. Look it up. He had THREE tight ends that put up, collectively, a great set of numbers. Take a look at the wideouts Stanford had. You have to emphasize the TE position. Also, not many know this. But Stanford actually RAN the ball MORE than they passed it.
When Harbaugh left, he went to the 49ers. What happened? Well, they won, but why? His tight ends were better than any of his WRs. So what got emphasized? Look at the crap the 9ers had at wideout. Watch what they draft. |

#40 Posted: 3/5/2012 12:09:18 PM This has nothing to do with white or black. It has to do with the conference they played in.
Don't be fool with RG3 numbers. Last year, he played in 5 games that the team's defense ranked the worst in the country (bottom 5%).
How about remember these guys that played in this conference that put up huge numbers and turned out to be burst.
Andre Ware - Heisman winner
David Klingler
Jason White - Heisman Winner
Kevin Kolb -soon to be bust
I am add Sam Bradford to this list soon.

Gotta disagree.........I see Luck as the only qb in this draft that IS smart enough & tough enough to carry a bad team, at least as far as a bad team can be "carried".
I've seen the kid play a lot for 3 years so I might have a better feel for what he's all about. He has "it".........the ability to see the field & feel what's around him. He makes a lot of great decisions & doesn't bail out early the way Locker did. I don't know where you got the idea he wasn't tough........can't remember him ever getting knocked out of a game. |

#44 Posted: 3/5/2012 7:25:12 PM Bottom line is, if you can't either run or at least move (ala Big Ben, etc.) to buy time and if you aren't accurate, you have almost no shot long term in the NFL.
It's the most difficult position to handicap. Just look at how many first rounders start in the NFL (and most are HIGH first rounders):
Cutler Stafford Rodgers Ponder Vick Eli Manning P. Manning (soon to be Luck)
Freeman M. Ryan Cam Newton Kolb Alex Smith Sam Bradford Dirty Sanchez Flacco Big Ben Blaine Gabbert Carson Palmer P. Rivers Dalton Jake Locker a first rounder expected to take over T. Jackson and Brees were 2nd rounders.
Schaub was a 3rd rounder
Indy will be taking another 1st round QB and Cleveland will likely follow suit (and he will replace McCoy...a high 2nd round pick I believe). Miami also in the QB hunt as is Washington. Someone is gonna end up with Manning.
Pretty much 25 of the NFL QB's are first or high second round picks. Many of them top 10 overall picks.
And that said, there are still SCORES of 1st round QB's that have failed.
It's flat out the toughest position to predict long term success. Doesn't matter if you're white or black.
