Duncan Keith remembers the bad days (a few years ago) of a mostly empty United Centre.  The Blackhawks defenceman was telling reporters the other day about how all the players were given business cards and instructed to leave the cards behind at restaurants and bars and to hand them out to friends and strangers. On the card was a website and instructions how the holder of the card could get 2 free tickets to any game they want.

In 2007 Rocky Wirtz takes over the team following the death of his father Bill Wirtz, who oversaw the decline of the Hawks.  Rocky was facing HUGE losses when he came in and was very surprised to see what the books looked like.  In the spring of 07, Rocky and gary buttman have a business meeting and discuss a plan that gary formulated that would see the Hawks win their first cup since 1961 and resurrect the dying franchise.

These are the shocking abysmal attendance records prior to the Hawks "winning" the cup.  As you can clearly see, these are HARDCORE fans that show up thru thick and thin.

2002-2003  14,794  (24th) almost last

2003-2004  13,253  (27th) last

2005-2006  13,318  (29th) last

2006-2007  12,727  (29th) last

Divine intervention....

2008-2009   22,247  (1st)  cup run

2009-2010   21,356  (1st)  cup winner

Oh...I remember days long ago when I could actually go to a Red Sox game at Fenway without giving my left nut as payment. Now we have the Pink Hat crowd that goes to sing songs and wave to the TV cameras on their IPHONES. I think they a relatives of the lower bowl at the ACC. All because of their recent success and have driven ticket prices to the highest in MLB.

I wasn't aware of those dismal Hawks stats. I know that as bad as it got with the Bruins at times in betwixt Cups with anger towards Sinden and Jeremy Jacobs...the bluebloods still filled the seats.

In 07-08 the Bruins averaged little over 15,000.  That ranked them 26th in the league They were pretty low prob because the old arena only seated 16 k, i dont know.

Hawks, Pens and Bruins have the most bandwagon fans.

Bruins were just as bad with attendance in the 20-25 range even when the finished 2nd in the East one year. I went to the playoff game 5 years ago and it was like home ice advantage for the Habs! You'd think the fans would be more loyal to Bruins and Hawks considering they are 06 teams.

Pens would be gone if Bettman didn't give them Crosby.

They also all have rings now so.....

It was funny when Burkie bashed the Pens model. I dont like him but its true. It's not like it takes brains to accomplish what they did and you still need to get lucky with the players.

All the tanking from the Oilers and they still suck.

Why don't you pull out the attendance sheet from before the worst 5-6 year stretch in franchise history?  Do you even understand what the ownership did to the fanbase during that time? No, because you're a douchebag clown.  Even with poor attendance during those years, the true, hardcore fans never jumped ship.  Once the old man died, and they put together a real front office and marketing department, the fans came back. Trust is a big thing between a fanbase and ownership.

Now go get your fuckin' shinebox and polish off your President's trophy.

The "official" capacity for the old Garden was 14,890 although there were a number of standing room tickets sold which boosted the numbers. So...averaging a little over 15000 was technically a sellout.

I agree with Wiggens that in the new building during a few of the lean years...a lot of Habs and Leafs fans showed up in force due to high ticket prices. Typically in Boston...the Bruins have a core of blue collar hardworking fans while the rich elite favor the Celtics and Red Sox. That core of fans have been diminished in some fashion by the high ticket prices because they are truely blue-collar. It is an interesting sociological demographic.

So I guess what your saying Dangerbay is that selling out every game whether the team is good or not is a sign of Great Fans and a Great Franchise?

JMC is correct. It use to be that the only way to see the Hawks to go to the games. After the old man passed he started a contract where all games were televised and thr buzz for the Hawks started back up. Know your facts bud. And price of tickets has NOTHING to do with fan base. And those $61 tickets are for standing room only. Due to thr fact thst every game sells out and they don't have enough seats for everyone
