I've been watching the Leafs a lot lately and I don't like what I see there. I think this club is over rated big time. The wins they do get are rarely convincing or dominate. During the beginning of the season they were able to mystify the experts by winning despite being out shot and having very little puck possession time. They relied on divine goaltending, speed, and toughness. In the last few weeks I've seen them trying to clean up their game (most suspensions), and its hurting them. They need the big high flying checks for the fans and the team to react otherwise its just a Jonathan Bernier shooting drill. The Leafs don't generate enough offence to create much excitement they have to do it with physical play. I haven't checked the actual stats on how many checks they're dishing out now compared to earlier in the season but it's more about the type of check. The obvious reason I can see for this attitude change is that Burke is no longer at the head of the ship. I notice that the other teams he had a hand in building lost some of their physical game when he left too, but they also managed to win. On top of this "wussy trend" their divine goalies look rattled. Bernier's last couple outing have been horrid. Big time lack of confidence but maybe he can't handle the pressure. Finally their speed has disappeared. Wings, Rangers, and Islanders all made the Leafs look slow. Some of the quickest players like Kadri don't seem to be able to play offence and defence effectively. Carlye finally gets some D out of the kid and now hes useless on O. It appears that the players either don't like Carlye or don't listen to him. This is the second "world class winner" of a coach this team has had and they sill stink , so maybe it ain't the coach.
Anyway all these observations and criticisms are pretty easy to make from my couch at home and now that I took the time to write it the Leafs will surely come out flying tonight, but even if they do the point is the same Fade The Leafs, this is no group of winners.
