In the span of a week, Meyer has gone from a tragic figure to being trashed left and right, especially by Gators fans. A few weeks ago, he was a phenomenal coach whose health kept him from the sport he was born to lead, and he taught us all a lesson about the importance of family by leaving his high-profile gig to spend time with his wife and kids. That was exposed as a lie when Meyer became a commentator for ESPN — a job that allowed him more free time but was far from retirement — but he avoided the harsh criticism he’s getting now because ESPN doesn’t compete with Florida.

Now, it’s pretty clear what really happened. Meyer could barely handle getting thrashed by Nick Saban and Alabama in the 2009 SEC title game, so he quit, then changed his mind. Then, he couldn’t handle the mediocre 2010 season at all. Rebuilding UF was going to take some work, and when he looked around, there were no Tim Tebows, Percy Harvins, Brandon Spikeses, Dan Mullens or Charlie Strongs around to help him. He’d have to put in ungodly hours to right the ship — perhaps sacrificing his health — and at best, he’d still be playing second fiddle to Saban for a few years. That’s what he really meant when he said he was unhappy with the state of college football at his OSU press conference on Monday.

I hate Urban Meyer. I’d say he’s worse than a used car salesman but I don’t want to insult used car salesman. So I knew something was up when he suddenly said he was having health problems and had to resign from Florida. Like why not wait a week before announcing your retirement? Why did he have to do it right before the Sugar Bowl? Because he wanted to make it all about him, that’s why. Just like he does with everything because he’s a freaking egomaniac. Florida isn’t in the National Title game and nobody cares about them. So how do you change that? How do you make it all about you? By announcing your retirement. It’s like Arod saying he would file for free agency during the World Series. A classic “look at me moment.” And then before I even had time to write a blog about it he turns around and says he changed his mind. Now he’s just taking an leave of absence whatever that means. (AKA – that other job he was probably looking at fell through) So basically in the end nothing happened. Except now for the next week we get to hear non stop Urban Meyer speculation, ballwashing and grandiose stories about how hard he works. Awesome! (Hmm seems similar to this past Michigan vs. Ohio State week in which he tried to hog the spotlight) Seriously George Regan could take some serious PR lessons from this clown. How to become the #1 story in college football and hijack the National Championship Game without doing a god damn thing by egomaniac Urban Meyer. Probably be a best seller.

I will never be mad at the guy as long as he does not dis the gators.

He did great things for us.

I was sad when he finally left  --  but I could also tell that the passion was gone his last season.  He was totally not into it any longer.

It will be interesting to see if the passion is bck this year.

Urban wins games.....lots of them.

Take a look at his undefeated Utah squad.....that team was damn good, and the BCS made sure they didn't get a big team to whip, so they fed Pitt up.

That 2004 Utah team was amazing, and Tebow didn't play a down.  Urban coached the Utes for 2 seasons....he was 20-4 ATS.

Urban can coach, but I am wondering if he will stick with Braxton Miller at QB......he didnt show me a whole lot LY, wouldnt be surprised if he is replaced at some point this season.

Braxton is one of the reasons Urban came to Columbus, fact.

The reason he didn't show you much last year was because he was a true freshman, under a program with 5 key players suspended, under a HC who was thrown into the fire after JT was canned.

This is the type of QB Urban loves to coach, and at some point in the season we may see back-up Kenny Guiton in the offense as well, with Braxton as a rb/wr in a couple schemes.

This year isn't their year, so the bowl ban doesn't hurt as much....next season they'll be pre-season top 5, and in the national title picture.

Urban Meyer and Nick Saban are the 2 best coaches in college football. Give Urban 1 year to install his system. Like Cherokee said - they will be in the national title picture next year and it wouldn't surprise me if they win it in year 3!

Those are good reasons why Miller struggled last year....and his numbers were pretty good for a Freshman, so maybe I am being a bit hard on the kid.

I disagree that Braxton Miller was one of the reasons that Urban Meyer went to Columbus.  Urban was excited about the Big 10, and another challenge...he knows he is fully capable of recruiting top notch QB's every season, so if Miller goes down or under achieves he won't hesitate to move on to the next guy.

The big thing that raises red flags when listening to people talk about Miller is the comparisons to Terrell Pryor.  Pryor underachieved mightily in my opinion......if Miller is not expected to take the program any higher than Pryor did, then it is best to cut ties with him right now.  What is the point in being the next Terrell Pryor????

He's more of a Troy Smith than TP....Troy had a better arm, but Brax has better legs.

TP was just lazy, couldn't read defenses, and depended on his raw talent rather than actually putting in the work.

Absolutely agree with you TP.

Troy Smith had a pretty good run at OSU. I also tend to think that Urban will have the Buckeyes in the title hunt very soon.  The cupboards are far from bare, and his system can succeed as early as year 2.

For the record, I was a big Tressel fan, and I think how he was forced to resign was garbage.  He was a lifetime Ohio guy, and he did things the right way.....and somehow ESPN and the NCAA decided to burn him down.  Utter bullshit.  Hopefully, Tressel gets back on the sidelines somewhere soon.

vern he ain't never coaching at a d-1 school again. Tressel had fred flintstone offenses and his downfall was recruiting thugs. Be honest if he had john cooper's record you would've said good riddance. Nothing against you vern just my 2cents. when you portray yourself as god, apple pie and buckeye football you better not have skeletons in your closet
