I can't believe I have to wait 4 friggin months for hockey again   Also, I could see how you could hope for a Devils run.  Good playoff team, and last year heroics for Broduer to go out on a high note.  I like that bet a lot for however much a future is worth.  And if someone could find me a site that offers if the Maple Leafs will make the playoffs then I will gladly take the yes on that bet.  Should be the year the finally get in.  Or hey, how about a for shits and giggles bet on Winnipeg?

a lot of yapping about 39 year old Jaromir Jagr returning to the NHL with either my Penguins OR the Red Wings. I think he would be more of a distraction for either team.

the guy is an old loaf that doesn't want to get hit. think Alexei Kovalev with even less heart. hope my Pennies pass. better prospects in Wilkes-Barre

Or hey, how about a for shits and giggles bet on Winnipeg?

the Thrashers lineup is not that bad. lot of potential with Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd, Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane. they were in the running for a playoff spot until mid-march of last season. playing in a hockey mad Canadian city could push them over the top.

some interesting prelim 2011-12 Cup odds @ http://www.oddschecker.com/ice-hockey/nhl/stanley-cup/winner (courtesy of I-Got-5-On-It). Lightning @ 16-1 in the East and Ducks @ 27-1 look interesting.

Rat,

The Ducks are way too loose defensively for my taste and Hiller's health leaves them with a huge question mark in goal. Anaheim has that great first line and a couple of very good offensive defensemen in Visnovsky and Fowler, but their defensive zone coverage in general is horrible and their forwards don't back check as hard as they should.

They are entertaining to watch because they create a lot of chances offensively and also give up a ton of shots on goal, but that usually isn't a recipe for playoff success. I really think they need another reliable blue liner that thinks defense first to help balance out that crew.

Allowing at least 3 goals in every playoff game vs a piss poor offensive team like Nashville tells you that there has to be a change of philosophy of how they approach games. Perhaps they fell into a false sense of security when Hiller was playing because he would often bail them out. The Ducks are normally one of teams that gives up the most shots on goal every year and that has to change regardless of what goalie is minding the net.

I know Selanne did a Ponce De Leon impersonation this past year, but I suspect that was his last year of excellent production and maybe his last year period. God knows that Getzlaf's line is probably the toughest line in the NHL to defend right now because they can beat you with fancy goals and obviously they can control the play down low with their excellent size. But it has always seemed to me that the Duck have lacked consistent scoring from the 2nd line. This past year was probably the best production the Ducks have received from their 2nd line since their Cup winning year. If memory serves they had Kunitz, McDonald, and Selanne on the 2nd line that year playing behind Penner, Getzlaf, and Perry.

Again, a huge improvement in team defense is a must. We can argue that a healthy Hiller solves that problem right away, but I'm sure you have watched enough of their games to agree that they are too loose defensively to win it all unless Hiller stands on his head for 4 rounds. Hell, if Hiller isn't 100% they will probably struggle to make the playoffs in the very deep Western conference.

It seems that Winnipeg is on the right track, but in their case, I think they have to walk before they can run. They are another team that is poor defensively and they need an upgrade in goal. Most, if not all of their defensemen are offensive minded, but aren't exactly the type of guys to shut down opposing teams top lines.

Trades and/or free agency is a must for that blue line. It is about time for Bogosian to garbage or get off the pot. I know defenseman take longer to mature, but he must make a nice jump in his game in 2011-12 or else he will go from great prospect to suspect. I'm sure the management of Winnipeg would love a trade offer for him similar to the one St. Louis got for Erik Johnson. They can dream, can't they?

They also desperately need a true #1 center. Burmistrov looks like he will be an excellent two way centerman, but is his ceiling that of a #1 type center? I doubt it, but who knows. A couple of years ago it looked like Little could be a nice top two line forward, but it appears that being both small and a fairly slow has caught up to him. Kane looks like he has a chance to be a stud, but he will need some help. Ladd overachieved this past year. I like him, but his role was perfect in Chicago (3rd line grinder with size that chips in offensively). If he is your highest scoring winger, your team has major problems. Antropov is Antropov.......... enough said.

The move to Winnipeg should be invigorating for this team, but there are way too many holes to fill right now. At least Kane and Burmistrov should form a nice duo for many years to come.

I agree 100% regarding old #68. Jagr was washed up 5 years ago. Time to hang 'em up Jaromir!

I will somewhat agree with your assessment of the goalie problems, TDD, BUT the same could be said of my Penguins in the early 90's (Barrasso was over rated).  they overcame that with potent offense. Ducks will win a bunch of NBA on Ice" games next season. also I don't think their D lineup is that "weak". with Visnovsky and Fowler they have solid "defensive D-men" like Beauchemin, Lilja and Brookbank.

when you have forwards like the "RPG Line" of Bobby Ryan, Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf AND Teemu Selanne, Jason Blake, along with Saku Koivu, although all three are a bit "long in the tooth", you have the makings of a "fill the net" team.

Has Teemu said if he is coming back or not next season?  Since Atlanta played in Anaheim last year I guess it will be Anaheim to Winnipeg this next year... so his behind better stay another year for that game alone

Rat,

Perhaps you are right that you want to let your big dogs run, but if you score 3 goals in a playoff game, you can't lose two of those games in a single series.

I love to watch Anaheim play because of their attacking style, but I just don't think they'll have success in the playoffs with that style. Having a third man high would diminish their cycle down low, but it would do wonders for their GAA. However, it is fun to watch their games because almost every other team in the league is thinking defense first.

Lydman might be their best defensive defenseman and it seems that they should have a good balance of offensive and defensive minded rear guards, but I think they lack some size and grit back there and as I mentioned in the previous post, a different approach is needed for the way their team defense is taught (back checking and neutral zone play). No doubt it will hurt their offensive output, but unfortunately that is the only way to go deep in the playoffs these days.

Kudos to Holmgren for giving us plenty to talk about. Perhaps some other GM's will have the balls to make some other big trades now.

Let's look at the top two lines right now in Philly and LA.

Philly
J. van Riemsdyk   D. Briere     J. Voracek
S. Hartnell           C. Giroux    W. Simmonds

If Briere and Giroux both play center (what's left?) the Flyers will be very small down the middle. 3 of their top 4 wingers have size and some skill, but Voracek will be the key though. They will need some scoring and creativity from him to remain in the top 10 in scoring like they have been for the last handful of years. Does he mature in a major media market or is he the next Nikolai Zherdev?

I just don't see Bryzgalov being the savior. He'll have a good defensive team in front of him, but he will also be under intense media scrutiny. I'm not familiar with his mental makeup so I'm not sure if he'll be able to handle the pressure of being a #1 goalie on a team that expects to contend for the Cup. If Bryzgalov plays well and Pronger stays healthy the Flyers will easily be in the top 10 in GAA for the first time in many years and probably out of the top 10 in goals scored.

Holmgren finally realized that you need goaltending and defense to win it all, especially after witnessing the two best regular season defensive teams in the NHL play in the finals. That did not go unnoticed by other league executives. It also appeared that the refs let them play a little more this year in the post season, so having a few bigger, grittier wingers was a must. Vancouver lacked size from their top 4 wingers.

Los Angeles
D. Penner       A. Kopitar         D. Brown
R. Smyth       M. Richards       J. Williams

Nice mix from their top two centers. LA has always lacked having a 2nd line center that can produce a little more offense. This allows Stoll to drop down a line where he is better suited. Both Penner and Smyth are entering their walk years so they should be motivated to produce in 2011-12. Brown doesn't have great skill, but is the type of player you want on your roster come spring time. Williams has the most skill of their top 4 wingers, but rarely stays healthy. The Kings will have 3 wingers that go to the net to create havoc and scoring opportunities.

Throw in Doughty and JJ on the back end to go with a decent goalie and the Kings should be a tough team to play against.

Flyers Lines Barring Changes Should Look Like:

Van Reimsdyk  Giroux Voracek

Hartnell             Briere    Leino

 Versteeg           Powe   Simmonds

 Carcillo/Shelly   Betts     Nodl

                         Schenn

You can scratch Ryan Smyth off the Kings top two lines as word is it is pretty much a done deal that he is going back to Edmonton for not much in return to create money for Richards. This comes from the same source that 5 days ago said Carter was going to Columbus.

Jagr back to Pengs?
Stamkos to stay at the Bolts?
Richards to NY?
Colorado to actually get a goaltender?
Brooks Laich to...?
Pierre Mcguire traded

Pretty good offseason.  I'm kinda hoping Toronto picks up Stamkos, but I think he will end up staying in Tampa.  Good news out on the recovery of Malkin and Crosby by the way

I would say the top Penguins off season priority is a big banger Thomas Holmstrom style power forward that can created garbage in front of the net and bang home rebounds on the power play. the Predators UFA forward Joel Ward would look good in Black & Gold.

my Penguins resigned Pascal Dupuis for 2 years @ $1.5 million per. "Duppy" a "heart and soul" player who's excellent on the PK. Pens would like to re-sign Tyler "The Tiger" Kennedy BUT didn't make him a qualifing offer. he would be missed by the fans BUT the Pens probably have as good or better (and definately bigger) @ Wilkes-Barre. don't think Shero would keep him unless the price is right.

no word on Jaromir "Knacker" (geezer) as of June 27th. hopefully the Penguins pass. Jagr would be more of a distraction than he's worth.

reports are that BOTH Sid and Geno should be ready for the start of next season. hope that's correct

You'll be able to get better odds on most teams thru out the season/playoffs.

You can exclude devils/kings for next year because they won't be making the finals.  Standard NHL procedure.

Usually. But then there were the back-to-back years the Red Wings and Pens went to the Finals.

alot of teams have a chance.... it's all about who gets hot at the right time, I generally like to wait mid season and make a pick when I see good value for it
