#51 Posted: 4/25/2006 3:52:26 PM And this is the same guy often credited with releasing the opening line in Las Vegas!
What's so great about setting an opening line? Do you know why books set such low limits when they first put lines out? Because they know the lines are vulnerable. "Tape watchers" that are on the ball could make a fortune picking apart opening lines if they could get down sufficient action.
It's actually the players that set the lines, the books just open them with an approximation. The art to bookmaking is in shading your lines in relation to other books to maximize handle, theoretical return, and a favorable distribution of action. |

#53 Posted: 4/25/2006 3:57:39 PM fatal flaw of the human [betting] mind is to make correlations that are unimportant and irrellevant.
i agree. the reason that panther's system originally caught my attention was the one contrarian angle where in certain instances like night games, he liked to bet against the move of the line. in a roundabout way, he was betting against public biases toward certain variables that are either unimportant (certain team/player success over only a small sample size) and/or irrelevant (team history/prestige) |

#55 Posted: 4/25/2006 4:36:54 PM loudon, just read your post about "trap lines" and i couldn't agree more. i've read numerous times that there is just no such thing. it just wouldn't make sense for them to take on the unnecessary exposure when in most cases they have an zero risk profit.
along those lines, one thing that has ALWAYS bothered me is prop bets. 15-20 cent vig?!?! might as well write a personal check to the maloof brothers

#64 Posted: 4/25/2006 10:38:00 PM I am simply fascinated by the 215 Rule. I wonder what the magical force behind this Rule is? I mean what is the real significance of 215? why not 210 or 220? But no, it is 215 and only 215. Now I was thinking and wondering if it is any coincidence that 2/15 is the day after Valentine's day, one of the biggest CANDY days of the year, behind Halloween and Easter...ok, maybe not. Still trying to come up with the exact answer... while I'm busy with that task, here are some interesting 215 facts for you all to enjoy:
-The California Penal Code for CARJACKING is 215.
-Biunpentium's atomic number is 215.
-February 15th (2/15)in 1764,The city of St. Louis, Missouri is established.
-February 15th is Flag Day in Canada.
-February 15th in 1564, Galileo Galilei, Italian astronomer and physicist is born.
-Jaromir Jagr, Ugueth Urbina, Brian Propp, and Chris Farley all born on 2/15.
-From The Old Testament, Genesis 2:15, "And the Lord God took man, and put him into the paradise of pleasure, to dress it, and to keep it."
-Timothy 2:15, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."
-215 is the Area Code for Philadelphia, Pennslyvania.
- Interstate 215 (I-215) runs through Salt Lake City, Utah.
-XM Radio channel 215 is Pittsburgh Traffic and Weather.
-215 is the single season NHL point record held by Wayne Gretzky.
ok, enough to ponder for now....
let the creative comments begin

#75 Posted: 4/25/2006 11:51:17 PM I've been using the 215 rule since 1985, and now i'm a trillionaire.
Me and Bill Gates and Donald Trump all sit around on Tuesdays smoking stogies and talking about what a great rule it is.
I just wait till it goes to 215 and I pull the trigger, and head back to the jacuzzi full of playboy bunnies, while i'm drinkin' beers and listening to tunes.
All hail the 215. |
