what percentage of your bankroll do you tie up in futures plays, if any...??

looking back in time, at what age would you pin yourself as a "gambler"??

have you ever worked on the other side of the fence?? if so, elaborate, if you wish, as to it's impact, if any, on your capping

when all hell breaks loose, do you reach for your chuks, or your firearm of choice??

Vanzack, since you have 45k+ posts @ Covers in the past decade, what has been the biggest change about the site that you have noticed during that time frame?

Again fellas... PLEASE PLEASE keep all the childish stuff to a minimum.  Lets get some real conversation going.  Only way you can do that is to ask some real questions.

If we cant get it in here then Im going to move it to GD.  Just thought it would be more fun in the box where you bust balls a bit.  I didnt want to have to censor anything and that was one of the reasons I picked the box.  If you censor something then you may not get the full effect of the answer.  If someone wanted to post a pair of TITS.....  I didnt want to have to erase the post because we were in the MAINS

Beets - should I start answering?

I would like to spend some time on each question, and I will take the time and answer them all.

Vanzack, I know you've been a big advocate for Matchbook over the years, but what's going on with them recently? I tried to deposit some money with them last week, and they told me the only way they were accepting deposits these days was through interbook transfers.

No online banking, no wire transfers, etc.

They told me things might improve in the future, but, yeah, this doesn't sound good.

Have any insight?

How important do you feel watching a team's form first hand is before betting them ? Or do you feel that paper stats can tell the story well enough without using the eye test ?

 1)  What is your favorite sport to bet on and why ?  On the flip side, what sport do you think is the easiest to handicap ?

I bet on Football, Baseball, and Soccer as a general rule.  I also bet on other events if I see a value somewhere, or current events.

I dont think any sport is easy to handicap.  All of them are a grind for me in their own way - and Im not being evasive about the question.  I am not gifted enough to "cap" at 60%+, so I find small edges in volume rather than big edges in particular spots.  I guess the difference between walmart and Saks, both can be profitable, but in different ways.

My gambling "portfolio" is made up of multiple potential income streams, I buy and sell lines, speculate on line moves, arbitrage, and make offers (at mb), and live bet - all of which overall hopefully is profitable.  So if my "capping" is down, hopefully one of the others is up, my goal is to squeak out a living overall.  Im sure I will get in to this in to detail later in the thread....

I made more on soccer this calendar year than I did on any sport in any year, so I guess right now soccer is my fav.

2)  What do you consider  a good "betting year" ?  Or do you go by year ?  Or is there a different schedule you may be on when determining success or not.  Do you quit after making a certain amount of money ?  Or do you bet all year round ?

A good betting year is one in which I reach my goals.  My method is heavily goal oriented, so different years and seasons have different goals which are modest.  The goals are not in terms of winning percentages, they are in terms of PROFITABILITY -  that is the only thing that matters to me - overall profitability.

There are often times that I quit a season once a goal is met, or when a stop gap is hit on the downside.  If I feel like something has changed where I no longer have an edge, or my model is not working - I will stop.  It is never because "I have enough money to pay my mortgage this year", it is only when I no longer feel I can be profitable doing a certain sport - or where I have gone off the rails and need to recalibrate.  It happened last year in NCAAF football, I quit in about week 8 because I was consistently missing the mark, so I just tried to realize where I had gone wrong and adjust.  There is always next year.

3)  Do you gamble for a living ?  If so, how long have you been doing it and how did you start ?  Did you start off as a hobby ?

I do gamble for a living (knock on wood).  I had a job and career that I quit about 10 years ago.  It was a good career, and I was a very young VP at a small electronics firm.  But I hated every minute of it.  I started shooting craps in the bathroom in 3rd grade, and booked a super bowl for every friend (and one teacher) in 5th grade (made 7 bucks I think).  Luckily, I have found a way to make it work so far and have saved up a good chunk of change.  Enough that I am no longer reliant on the market and conditions - and why I have been considering lately about how much this costs me, the risks, and if it isnt the smartest thing to take a break until something happens politically for the better.  More to come on that later Im sure.....

More questions:

1. Where do you see the state of the online sportsbetting industry in 5 years?  Are we destined to see shops close up and people flocking back to locals so long as it remains illegal for the US market?

2. When you say your goals are in terms of profitability, can you elaborate? Are you talking in terms of a percentage return or actual dollar figure?

3.  Do you believe you have to watch a lot of a sport (soccer, baseball, football) and really see a lot of teams to successfully cap a sport?

Vanzack.... do you smoke pot... drink?

Yes.  I am partial to chick flavored rums like razzleberry (the gayer the more I like it).  I also smoke pot about 3 or 4 times a year, last year I went on a bender and smoked a small bad the size of about and inch by an inch in about a week.  I like the way painkillers make me feel, but I know enough to stay away from them.

Fat chicks or slim?

I like lady parts, so big fools and tits are good.  I definitely dont like skinny.

Straight bets or parlays?

I cant remember my last parlay.

Year you made your first wager?

3rd grade.

Would you like to purchase and covers gear?

I made a covers shirt once and wore it to a football game.  Nobody said a word to me.

Have fun!

I always try.

I assume you need to have significant movement in a line to make money on buying and selling... What do you consider "significant" movement?  Also, when you hear people say sharp, square, public, or vegas, does your mind go crazy like me and want to beat the garbage out of that person?

Lastly, what is your advice to me in helping me to keep my mouth shut when going after touts? ( I will be asking everyone this question)

Largest wager ever made? How long ago was that wager? What sport? Win?

I dont bet NBA, NCAAB, or hockey.

I have made a couple of large wagers.  One was the Obama election, and a lot of that played out here at covers (im sure some will remember those threads).  About a week before the election, Obama went from about -200 to about +120, and I just kept buying and buying.  I ended up with a ton more than I was comfortable with, but for some reason I stuck with it.  I won about 200K in total.

I also won a large amount on the Colts to win the SB several years back (against the bears) - and that also played out here at covers.  I started a thread asking if it was better to take them at 12-1 before the playoffs began, or to roll over the bets until the SB.  I ended up with a ton of suggestions, was called a moron, all kinds of garbage - but I ended up getting enough out of that thread that I knew I should bet them at the 12-1 instead of rolling it over.  I made the wager at Pinnacle, for 15K total.  They beat KC in the first game, then went to Balt and won, and then beat NE in a crazy game.  Then - in the time between the Championship game and the SB - Pinnacle announces that they are leaving the US market.  It was a crazy time for me, I didnt know what to do, didnt know if I should panic or not - and it was actually the only time I talked to a head person there on the phone - and the guy quickly calculated the current value of the bet based on the SB ML and offered to cash me out at about 120K.  I took the deal, and received a check in the mail that looked like no other check I have ever seen - it was almost square - from some bank in the caribbean.  That check got me kicked out of a major bank, but that is another story.

I had a very big (too big, and I kick myself to this day) wager on the world cup final this past year, and lost.  I had holland - and it was mostly because I had won so much on the tournament - that I got a little loose.  I lost about 125k on that game.

I also lost a lot this year on the TCU / Wisky bowl game.  It could have been a lot worse, but somehow I managed to have some ML instead of all of it at -2.5, but I still lost right at about 100K.

I honestly much prefer to not have big standout wagers.  I prefer to have 20 wagers for 5k each than 1 wager for 100k.  It much better fits my model to go 11-9 on those 20 wagers than have all of it on the 1.

Just curious - is that big or small?

I watch high stakes poker sometimes on the game show network - and those guys play 200K pots for coinflips.

To say that 200K is my biggest wager ever I thought would be seen here as small.  But I really dont know.  Im sure there will be people who read that and laugh because they wager 200K often, and others who think it is impossible because they wager 5 dollars to support a miller geniune draft habit.

Since I promised honesty in this thread, I will admit that I do not own a yacht, and have never really banged a supermodel.

That is not to be repeated outside of this thread.
