I don't See How a Republican Can Win in 2016...

Question

...if Romney couldn&#x27;t defeat Obama this year.Romney was known as being a flip-flopper. He was accused of playing both sides. He was accused of saying what the audience wanted to hear. That is someone I would call middle-of-the-road politically.What&#x27;s going to happen in four years if the Republican nominee sticks to his conservative principles? I don&#x27;t see any way a candidate like that can win. The United States is a different country now. I no longer think it is a center right country. It is 50-50 at best.The only thing working for people with fiscally conservative beliefs is the House, Governors, and state legislatures. Conservative politics at the national level is gone.Does anyone see anything changing in four years?

Actually, fairly easy. Run on a platform of reforming corporate welfare and entitlements, reforming our current welfare system, cut defense spending where necessary, and most importantly:

disavow comments on abortion, rape, sending illegal immigrants home, etc. from those within your party and reform your party's platform to refelct that.

The problem with such a candidate is that he/she will not receive large campaign contributions from corps nor the religious rightwing wackos.

I think people will start to see the light when unemployment in still very high while most can only find part time work What will hurt the Democrats the most? Taxes....as they skyrocket. Soon you'll be taxed on healthcare, next you'll be taxed on the miles you drive, I'm just wondering when the breathing tax hit the streets?

[/Quote]Corporate welfare is a liberal term. If corporate welfare doesn&#x27;t exist in a conservative&#x27;s eyes then there is nothing to reform. We want to eliminate loopholes for individuals and corporations but keep the rates the same.Reforming welfare is easier said then done. Threatening to Take something away, even if only perceived, was the main reason Romney lost (welfare, SS, Medicare, etc)Republicans will have to stop talking about social issues. Personally, I&#x27;m conservative socially but I&#x27;m not going to impose my personal beliefs on anyone: abortion, happy marriage, legalized drugs, etc. The country is moving to the left fiscally. Socially, it is even moving even faster to the left. That is why I wouldn&#x27;t talk about social issues. I&#x27;m willing to give up the social issues for fiscal issues.

The horror stories of Obamacare should derail any Dem run for President in 2016. I am sure you will be called a racist or sexist if there are serious problems with healthcare delilvery post 2014. canosvp...I actually think that the GOP had a chance to win the presidency in 2012... but made fumble after fumble to give it away...I mean there was momentum in 2010 with the legislative branch...We also agreed on that thread that sara got exposedas plagiarizer that we would talk about the poor choices by the GOP to turn off enough voters to lose the presidential election...Perhaps if they choose not to repeat the poor choices and perhaps lack of a long term strategy beyond the "issue of the week" to have a conniption over they might win it in 2016

Cano&#x27;s first post was correct.  I don&#x27;t think the GOP will just give up, but it will be interesting how they tip-toe on some sensetive issues that they have been passionately against.&#xD;&#xA;The horrible recession has given the Demos a boost, think Great Depression, people with less money DO look for the government to assist them, call it human nature.  On social issues, the GOP is way behind the times.  As younger people get older and older people die out, things like happy marriage are here to stay, and opposing it will only make you look backwards.&#xD;&#xA;The key for the GOP is the far right.  They have to be the ones to pull out of the hole and be seen as electable.  After a string of  losses, I think they will change somewhat.  How much?&#xD;&#xA;We&#x27;ll see . . .

I actually agree to an extent with the OP.

The repubs potentially face some tough times ahead. The changing demographics and the growing emphasis / support of social issues that are typically not ones that repubs support (i.e. womens rights, happy rights, immigration etc...) has the possibility of making an extremely awkward platform for future repub candidates.

How do they try to capture the votes that they dramatically lost in the most recent election while still appealing to the "out of date" mentality of many conservatives? This is a serious issue and a serious question.

However, if the economy and general landscape slides dramatically over the next four years (Obamas fault or not) than that is the one way that I can see the repubs becoming immediately competitive again.
