The U.N. Security Council will hold a closed emergency meeting on Wednesday night to discuss Israeli strikes against the Gaza Strip (why was there not a emergency meeting concerning the 300 rockets that struck Israel last week ? ) as Israel threatened a wider offensive in the Palestinian enclave to stem rocket salvoes by Hamas militants.
The militant group Hamas, not the Palestinian Authority, controls Gaza.
Israel launched a major offensive against Palestinian militants in Gaza killing Ahmed Jaabari the military commander of Hamas in an air strike..Immediate calls for revenge were broadcast over Hamas radio.( revenge where have I heard that before ?)
"The occupation has opened the gates of hell," Hamas's armed wing said. Smaller groups also vowed to strike back and threatening an invasion of the enclave ...
After five days of escalating Palestinian rocket attacks..Operation "Pillar of Defence" began with a surgical strike on a car carrying the commander of the military wing of Hamas, the Iranian-armed Islamist movement which controls Gaza and dominates a score of smaller armed groups.
Army tanks shelled border areas of Gaza in south and the Israeli navy shelled a Hamas security position from the sea.
Hamas stuck back, firing at least four Grad rockets at the southern city of Beersheba in what it called its initial response. Israel reported damage but no casualties. Its 'Iron Dome' interceptor defence knocked out a dozen rockets in flight.
Today we relayed a clear message to the Hamas organization and other terrorist organizations," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said ....
On its Facebook page, the IDF wrote, “We recommend that no Hamas operatives, whether low level or senior leaders, show their faces above ground in the days ahead.”
Below the message was a picture of Jaabari with the word “eliminated” stamped across it.............
A US Pentagon spokesman "We're monitoring the situation closely. We stand by our Israeli partners in their right to defend themselves against terrorism," Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Warren said.
