One big difference wall:

private companies who relocate do NOT HAVE to hire existing employees whereas the union wants it in their contract that the city HAS to hire them if there is an opening.

the rationale is .....hire based on qualifications not tenure

Well I havent seen many companies that do not offer as an alternative to being laid off that the person can move to another location.

I dont see the issue personally..a union is similar to a large corporation, meaning a union serves many locations but of duplicate function..same as say Honeywell that has like a billion locations around the country with many replicate job functions.

It doesnt seem like a big deal to me..in fact it is a respectful way of consolidating schools that are reducing population and not punishing the staff in the process.

the staff in question may be part of the problem of a school that is closing........why shuffle those candidates over to a new school?

if they are good teachers then they should have to worry.

except at some point with dwindling population the district doesnt need as many teachers

I guess I dont think that is the reason for a school closing.

A bad teacher might be reason for some complaints and maybe some people leaving, but a school closing is usually due to a dwindling population base versus bad teachers..

I dont think they would be the sole reason either.

but you can weed out bad teachers if they had to interview and apply for new positions.

also, a bad teacher can do alot of damage to a young mind.

I would rather see the kids needs put in front of a teachers tenure
