Defiance - person living in the forests of russia in freezing winter and fighting the germans to avoid the holocaust, compelling stuff with daniel craig and liev schreiber.

Nestling - Indie movie with limited release - 30 something yuppie couple recreate their 20 something carefree lifestyle, poignant and funny in parts.

Defiance is an EXCELLENT movie about the Bielski Partisans who fought the Nazis in what is now Belarus during "The Great Patriotic War". agree it's VERY well acted by Daniel Craig as Tuvia Bielski, Liev Schreiber as Zus Bielski.

IF you like movies like Defiance, you should check out The Grey Zone (2001) with Harvey Keitel and Steve Buscemi. it's about the uprising of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Jewish "Sonderkommandos" that was able to partially slow down the Nazi's murdering of person by destroying one of the four crematoria and gas chambers.

also check out The Pianist (2002). it's Adrien Brody's Oscar winning role as Jewish-Polish concert pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman who survived the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII. it's a bit long at two and a half hours BUT the plot and acting are excellent. lots of "suspense" situations for Szpilman and pretty good action in spots

it's playing on the Showtime channels Friday Jan 18th, Sunday Jan 20th, Monday Jan 21st and Wednesday Jan23rd and it's well worth recording IF you have never viewed it.

Mr. Bogey,  Amazing how great movies can elude us.  I have a thin line between bad, good and great.  LA  Confidential is great!!

Cloverfield (2008) horror thriller that could be called "The Sea Monster That Ate Manhattan". the movie is shot in a hand held "amature video" format. really NO action in the first 25 minutes of the film which is all just the interaction between a bunch of "uppy-puppy" "20 something" New Yorkers. once it gets going it has some good action and "startle" scenes. pretty much a  movie but Canadian actress Jessica Lucas is VERY tasty

btw, the previously reviewed "Waking Ned Devine" has a GREAT rendition of the classic Irish folk song "The Parting Glass" which is sung often at Irish wakes and funerals. it's on YouTube >>>  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDB87o-njFQ  (copy&paste)

Turistas (2006). SICK horror-terror drama with a pretty lame plot BUT with some good action the second half AND some very tasty "meninas". pretty much

Very good movie with Deniro and a few other actors about this blue collar bus driver's sun who gets involved with the crime in NYC.. Very clever movie. Entertaining.

RinkRat, you ever see A Bronx Tale

Oh YES!!! one of my favorite "mob movies" of all time with Chazz Palminteri (who also wrote the story) as mob leader Sonny, Robert De Niro (who also directed) as Lorenzo the bus driver, Francis Capra as preteen "C", and Lillo Brancato, Jr. as teenaged "C".  Eddie Montanaro was GREAT as "Eddie Mush" as was  Al Sauchelli Jr. as Sonny's lieutenant "Bobby Bars".

saw an interview with Palminteri years ago where he said the story was semi-autobiographical from his childhood in the Bronx in the 1960's. the story was originally performed by him as a one man play.

it's definately    for anyone who like a good "mob movie"

btw, too bad Lillo Brancato, Jr got hooked on heroin and ended up involved in the shooting of a NYC police officer for which he got 10 years in prison. that dope can get anybody.

Holy garbage RinkRat......

I did not know that........ Oh my God........... I just went to his imdb page. Apparently. Brancato's accomplish shot the off duty cop and is serving a life sentence.

Wow Jesus Christ..........

Nonetheless it was a very fine movie as you know. It was simple and nothing over the top but there some poignant scenes. You think brancato would have learned not to hang around such bad people as he learned in the movie remember that scene he got out of his friends car and they all died because of that molotov cocktail that the black man threw back into their car.....

That's really insane. I had no idea.......

Gasland (2010) documentary on the effects on the local water and in some cases the air of horizontal drilling into natural gas shale formations (aka "fracking") esp in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas. the producer-director is a "tree hugger" BUT the people he interviewd, esp in Colorado and Wyoming (which is person Cheney country) were by and large "Country Conservatives" that probably would vote Republican.

pretty scary stuff when you hear the composition of the drilling and fracking fluids used in the process and also when you see where people can LIGHT their tap water on FIRE

movie trailer >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtpSgqUZ3oA (esp pay attention to 0:29)

you KNOW it's a PROBLEM for the oil & gas industry (and probably the TRUTH) because they funded a "counter-documentary" called "Truthland"

Spawn (1997) I'm usually NOT a big fan of comic book based action films BUT this one had excellent action, oodles of ordnance and plenty "stuff that go boom". thought that John Leguizamo as the wisecracking "Clown" was pretty good comic relief. the CGI was fantastic for a mid 90's movie.

Aliens in the Attic (2009) surprisingly funny kids sci-fi fantasy-comedy. kind of "stupid funny" but cute. funniest scenes are daughters yuppy-puppy boy friend being "mind controlled" and doing really stupid stuff. the "plot" has elements of E. T. and Mars Attacks. first 15 minutes are "page thru" but the last 90 is pretty much non-stop laughs.

HANNA - 2012 - Do yourself a favor and watch it. Lead female, Saoirse Ronan, was fantastic.  I hope that she won an award for this.

Super 8 - 2011 - I'm always ready for a good EBE (google it if you don't know) related movie... and this was a good one.

Prometheus - 2012 - I'm sure you've heard about this one. I, for one, thought it was a great flick. A prequel to the ALIEN film franchise.

Chernobyl Diaries - 2012 - Not bad... Not Great... it was what it was... a zombie/slasher type of flick set in Chernobyl, Ukraine.

Cabin in the Woods - 2011 - It was interesting to me... and has plenty of action once it starts happening.

Looper - 2012 - Futureistic time traveler Bruce Willis in another good action movie. Personally I really liked it... as I do most of his films.

Men in Black 3 - 2012 - I was surprised that I liked it so much. I expected it to be boring but they did a good job considering it was #3.

Resident Evil: Retribution - 2012 - What's not to like about a movie starring Milla Jovovich ... My fellow Ukrainian/fantasy girl, ha,ha,ha. Also featuring plenty of weapons that seldom, if ever, run out of ammo.

House at the End of The Street - 2012 - Starring Jennifer Lawrence. The movie has its twist and turn until the truth is revealed... and it keeps you guessing until then.

Apollo 18 - A complete waste of time for a sci-fi movie that fails to deliver anything beyond stupidity.

Cloverfield - Really Bad movie in my opinion... and I'm usually a sucker for any kind of EBE, alien, UFO type of show... just not this one.

Alien Raiders - DirecTV Pay Channel freeview weekend - A group of scientest takes over a supermarket to root out an alien infestation. I loved this flick... It made me keep my eyes and ears glued to the TV set.

I Am Number Four - One of nine living on Earth, an alien with extraordinary abilities poses as an ordinary teenager in the hope of evading those sent to kill him. Based on a novel by Pittacus Lore. I enjoyed this flick the first time I saw it back East and watched this again so my wife could watch it for the first time. For myself... I enjoyed watching Dianna Agron and also the Aussie Teresa Palmer who plays Number Six. My favorite scene involves #6 when she says "Red Bull is for pu$$ies"... despite the fact that I love Red Bull.

Altered - Freeview DirecTV - 15 yrs after they were abducted by aliens, four men get the chance to take revenge when they capture one of the creatures.  Again, another EBE type of film for me, which I love. I can't recall another film that tried this theme... but it worked for me and was very entertaining in my opinion.

Twelve Monkys - 1995 - After seeing Looper (the other Bruce Willis film I listed) I decided to see this again since I didn't recall it completely (drinking days gone bye). It was very good and could still make money in theatres if you ask me. Also a time travel based movie. Great cast.

Here's to good viewing LRR

definately agree on both  Apollo 18 and Cloverfield NOT being very good SciFi and very confusing in spots. first half hour of Cloverfield was a complete waste as was most of Apollo 18 until the very end which had somewaht of an interesting "twist". both definate

also think Prometheus was NOT up to Ridley Scott "Alien" standards. had good CGI and SOME action BUT I thought it kind of "dragged" esp early on. looked like it was "over cut" to try and reduce the running time and something was lost in the plot. Scott will probably release a "redux" version sometime in the future. ending obviously sets up for a sequel.

I didn't think Hanna was that good. Saoirse Ronan as Hanna Heller was not as interesting a heroine as Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games". did have some good "chase scenes" BUT the villians were all pretty "cartoonish"

just happened to watch The Conspirator (2010) on EPIX last night. had seen before but with the recent interest in Lincoln, I though I would re-visit. very well acted movie about the post Lincoln assassination period of American history with the emphasis on the trial and execution of Mary Surratt. IF you saw Lincon and enjoyed it, I think you will like this one too. it's been on the EPIX channels every so often recently

End of Watch

Wow. Loved it. Gritty with great performances from all involved.

Pena should have been nominated for an Oscar.

Highly recommended.

watched Rules of Engagement (2000) last night on the Fox Movie channel. it's NOT "A Few Good Men" BUT still a pretty good "military courtroom drama". well acted by Tommy Lee Jones, Samuel L. Jackson, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley and Bruce Greenwood. retired Marine Captain turned actor-military movie advisor Dale Dye (Platoon, Casualties of War, Saving Private Ryan) plays Major General Perry.

the movie was written by former Virginia Senator Jim Webb who himself was a Vietnam Marine Officer combat veteran. pretty much shows how the US Government would "hang the military out to dry" to cover up their own incompetence.
