As usual, I don't really agree with your insinuations.
Yes, the best ride can win the derby, but the best ride is sometimes made to look that way by the best horse. Was Big Brown's trip the best (he was 8 wide through the first turn)? Was Barbaro's (he was wide early and on the outside the whole trip)? Then again, they both won and the jockeys knew they a great horse so why worry about traffic. I suppose if Big Brown lost, we would be blaming KD the same way Stevens deserves blame for costing Point Given the triple crown.
GG was a great jockey but had a reputation for not being agressive around other horses. Does Looking at Lucky ring a bell? And while JL is another great jockey, I don't love him in 20 horse races (think Union Rags).
In other words, I pay attention to the jockey, but only based on style and where the horse expects to be early. As you said, MG won the 3rd day he ever drove at Churchill.
As usual, I don't really agree with your insinuations.

I don't pay attention to what a person picks, I pay attention to how they got that pick (analysis).
I make my picks on Derby, Preakness, Belmont, and Breeders Cup days and that's it. Since I did not hit any of the triple crown races last year, you are probably right.

No kidding right? I'm pretty sure Smarty had the highest speed figure for every segment of that race except for the last 1/16th.
Funny thing too is without Birdstone, Smarty wins by 8 and puts away 4 horses who came right him.
No one with horse acumen really blames Elliot.
